Job Summary:
The Water Conservation & Utility Administration Intern will work with the District's Administrative Services team to support water conservation initiatives and assist in various office administration tasks. The ideal candidate will gain hands-on experience in water conservation, customer outreach, utility administration, and office operations while contributing to essential projects and tasks aimed at improving the District's customer service and sustainability efforts.
This position is for 40 hours per week (7:30 am to 6:00 pm, Monday - Thursday, excluding holidays) May through August of the current year (exact dates can be flexible with the candidate's school schedule). This position is temporary and will not be eligible for benefits.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Conservation Duties:
- Assist in developing the Customer Continuous Flow Detection and Outreach Program to help identify and address water flow issues for customers.
- Support planning and participation in summer conservation outreach and education events, including WestFest booth and parade.
- Collaborate with the Administrative Services Director to create a Conservation Plan for submission to the state, as required for 2025.
- Research new customer portal options to enhance customer access and engagement related to water conservation and billing.
- Collect, review, and analyze customer water usage data to identify patterns, trends, and areas for improvement. Develop actionable program recommendations, best practices, and marketing opportunities that drive increased water conservation across customer segments.
Office Duties:
- Assist Office staff in answering phone calls from District customers, providing education on billing inquiries and water conservation best practices.
- Create work orders for Meter Technician field staff to investigate customer concerns, including water leaks and pressure checks.
- Provide in-person assistance to District customers who come to the office for services such as making payments or signing up for new water service.
- Implement strategies to streamline and improve the processing of return mail, focusing on reducing paper waste and improving customer connections.
- Assist with additional office-related duties as assigned by the Administrative Services team.

Prior Work Experience: Prior customer service experience is preferred.
Education and Training: The ideal candidate will be a current student or recent graduate pursuing a degree in Environmental Science, Public Administration, Sustainability, or a related field.
Licenses, Certifications, Etc.: Valid Utah driver's license
Preferred Skills and Abilities:
- Proficient with Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Ability to accurately type 30 wpm and operate various types of office equipment such as copier, fax machine, 10 key, and computer.
- Working knowledge of general office maintenance and practices including manual and computer recording and filing procedures and methodologies.
- Working knowledge of basic mathematics.
- Working knowledge of basic public relations sufficient to provide outstanding customer service and develop effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Ability to solve problems effectively.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to maintain a cooperative, enthusiastic, motivated, team-oriented attitude.

Overall Effort and Work Location:
- Must be able to withstand occasional periods of moderate physical or mental activity.
- Must be able to work a predictable and consistent schedule. Occasional, but infrequent, overtime may be required. Minimal travel for training or other meetings.
