Position Summary

The technician will assist with a variety of wildlife surveys, monitoring and data collection including several taxa (Mammals, Reptiles, amphibians, insects) on an active military installation. These surveys support the Integrated natural resource management plan as well as federal and state wildlife laws. Schedule is 40 hours / week, generally four 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday. Flexible hours are required as some surveys require early morning and / or late nights. Successful applicants will have experience conducting wildlife surveys and monitoring for a variety of taxa. Desirable applicants will also have field experience with radio telemetry. More than one-year experience will be preferred. Applicants should be comfortable using Microsoft word and excel to enter data. Applicants should also be able operate GPS and GIS, experience mapping and processing spatial data with GIS software is preferred but not required. Strong navigation skills with map and compass / GPS are important. Strong quantitative / statistical analysis skills are desired but not required. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in these areas. Applicants must be able to work independently and hike in steep, rugged terrain in hot, dry conditions, and must have a current driver's license. The technician will use ATVs for field travel and should be comfortable driving on unmaintained dirt roads.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Successfully track and locate radio transmitted animals and collect spatial and other relevant data : Assist with small mammal trapping
  • Assist with mist netting for bats and birds
  • Follow precise protocols for monitoring or conducting wildlife surveys
  • Conduct point counts for birds. Analyze, summarize and / or review data; report findings, interpret results and / or make recommendations.
  • Identify data and information which suggest developing patterns of problems or complaints, from which general or specific trends and patterns can be discerned, suggesting a need for further investigation.
  • Writes or drafts technical reports, articles or related material based on research, investigation or analysis.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to work in a hot, dry climate and able to hike cross-country in steep, rocky, heavily vegetated sites carrying up to 20 lbs of equipment.
  • Camp Williams is an active military training range with special safety concerns. Must pass background check and maintain good driving record
  • must have current government-issued (U.S. - federal or state) picture id.
  • Experience and familiarity with wildlife survey techniques
  • Follow written protocols and literature, attention to detail
  • Strong data management skills

  • communicate information and ideas clearly, and concisely, in writing
  • operate applicable specialized equipment

  • enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in either written or electronic form.

  • Comfortable operating ATV or UTV on dirt roads
  • This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Obtained or working towards a B.A. or B.S. in wildlife, biology, conservation or related field
  • Experience with ArcGIS pro, field maps, and survey123
  • Identify birds of the mountain west by sight and sound
  • radio telemetry experience : rabies vaccine and bat handling experience
  • Experience and comfort working with venomous reptiles
  • mist netting experience (bats or birds)

    Living Accommodations

    Housing is not provided. Employee will be given a housing stipend and will be responsible for finding their own housing.

    Compensation

  • 400 weekly living allowance
  • 25 weekly commuting allowance
  • 1,100 one-time travel allowance to and from work site
  • 1,000 a month housing allowance
  • All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
