Summary Statement
Under the close supervision of the Public Works Director and the Park & Rec Lead, the Maintenance Technician performs skilled work in the maintenance and construction of city parks, streetscapes, cemetery, recreational facilities, and related sites. Responsibilities also include risk management, playground inspections, and support for city special events and athletic fields.
General Duties
- Maintenance of City Facilities: Perform care and maintenance for parks, cemetery, streets, sidewalks, buildings, water and sewer systems, and storm drainage systems.
- Landscaping Tasks: Mow, trim, water, and maintain city facilities.
- Irrigation Repairs: Repair sprinkler lines and heads.
- Snow Removal: Assist with snow removal operations using equipment or manually.
- Grave Assistance: Assist in the opening and closing of graves.
- Equipment Maintenance: Conduct operator-level checks and services on vehicles and equipment.
- Manual Labor: Perform a variety of manual tasks, including trenching, digging, and other maintenance activities.
- Safety Protocols: Follow and ensure compliance with City safety policies and procedures.
- Record Keeping: Prepare and maintain work order records using iWorq.
- Additional Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned.
Essential Duties
Grounds Maintenance
- Operate various types of equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, front-end loaders, mowers, and tractors for park and cemetery maintenance.
- Perform landscape construction tasks, including soil preparation, mowing, aeration, and planting of trees, shrubs, sod, and lawn seed.
- Conduct burials at grave sites.
- Apply pesticides and fertilizers in parks, streetscapes, and city buildings.
Facilities Maintenance
- Use custodial and grounds maintenance equipment, including power snakes, drills, electric saws, and front-end loaders.
- Clean, inspect, and repair Parks & Recreation facilities such as restrooms, playgrounds, tennis courts, fences, and drinking fountains.
- Perform janitorial tasks and minor repairs, assist with community events by setting up equipment, and work varied schedules as required.
- Remove graffiti using power washers, chemicals, or sandblasters.
Ball Field Maintenance
- Address, report, and document safety issues related to field conditions.
- Coordinate the maintenance and safety of playing fields.
- Drag athletic fields using an ATV and fill in holes with a shovel and rake.
- Water and chalk ball fields as necessary for play.
Marginal Duties
- Perform snow removal.
- Assist with the setup and takedown of special events.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records.
- Supervise seasonal employees as needed.
- Assist in performing burials at grave sites.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional coursework from a trade or technical school preferred. Playground Safety Inspector Certification preferred or must be obtained within one year of employment.
- Experience: Preferred three years of related work experience.
- Licenses and Certifications:
- Must have a valid Utah Driver's License.
- A Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required within six months of employment.
- Must pass a criminal background check.
- Knowledge of: Equipment and tools for park maintenance; general construction practices; principles of plant and turf care; arboriculture; OSHA safety standards.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 80 pounds occasionally, frequent standing, walking, bending, and kneeling.
Working Conditions
- Environment: Primarily outdoor work (90%), with exposure to variable weather conditions, heat, cold, noise, and potential physical hazards. May involve evening, weekend, and holiday work.
- Safety Sensitive: Utilizes personal protective equipment and follows safety protocols.
- Work Hours: Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with on-call availability required.
