Athletic Director

 

General Description: The Assistant Athletic Director assumes responsibility for assisting in the administration of the school’s athletic program and reports to the athletic director and/or principal on all matters related to the athletic program. The Assistant Athletic Director represents the school in the athletic director's absence at all school-based athletic events and meetings. The Assistant Athletic Director also assists with issues of concern regarding the athletic program for parents, teachers, student-athletes, and the community at large. 

 

Classification:  This position is designated as an administrative position.

 

Reports to:  Athletic Director and Principal, evaluation in accordance with District and Board Policy.

 

Supervises:  Coaches

 

 

Qualifications:

  1. Experience as an athletic director or head coach.
  2. First aid and CPR certification or eligibility for certification.
  3. Teacher candidate preferred
  4. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  5. Previous coaching experience.

Knowledge:  Requires knowledge of Title IX, NC High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) rules, NC Department of Public Instruction rules, and School District Policy.

 

Skills:  Requires demonstration of strong leadership skills to work as part of an administrative team, promote and support student activities as well as staff needs, problem-solving skills to support student success, service-related people skills, verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills to balance demands of a multi-tasking position, and technology skills in areas of office software.

 

Abilities:  Requires excellent attention to detail and follow through to meet interscholastic athletic responsibilities, significant confidential responsibilities due to student and staff issues, and limited fiscal responsibilities in the area of the school athletic budget.

 

Performance Responsibilities: Assist the Athletic Director in the following: 

 

Rules and Regulations

  1. Following all rules and regulations of the NCHSAA, NC Department of Public Instruction including preparing eligibility lists, submitting schedules, team records, and other documents that pertain to NCHSAA, DPI, and Granville County Public School District.
  2. Following all school (district) rules, regulations, and procedures according to school board policy.
  3. Communicating and enforcing that all athletes will be supervised at all times.
  4. Communicating and enforcing district social media and communication policies.
  5. Attending all required school and district meetings.
  6. Working with the Athletic Director in resolving problems of discipline concerning athletes.

Athletic Administration

  1. Assisting the Athletic Director in maintaining the facilities and athletic fields.
  2. Preparing reports as required by the administration.
  3. Improving the athletic program.
  4. Reporting and documenting all athletic injuries.
  5. Verifying that all participants have a physical examination, proper permission forms, and insurance verifications before the start of tryouts per school board policy.
  6. Checking student eligibility per NCHSAA, DPI, and school board policy.
  7. Planning, supervising, and attending recognition programs for school athletes.
  8. Supervising on-site athletic activities and performing athletic-related administrative duties during the months of June, July, and August, as needed.
  9. Coordinating the use of district facilities and fields prior to each athletic season promptly to address the needs of the middle school, high school, and community.
  10. Assisting with the contracting of non-district-owned facilities and fields as directed.
  11. Assisting with inspecting fields and facilities, and recommending repair or maintenance promptly prior to events.
  12. Assisting with the lining of the athletic fields at the beginning of each season and for special events.

Supplies, Equipment, and Uniforms

  1. Keeping an updated inventory of all athletic equipment and uniforms.
  2. Keeping supplies, equipment, and uniforms in satisfactory condition.
  3. Inspecting all athletic areas for cleanliness and the proper storage of all athletic supplies, equipment, and uniforms.
  4. Providing each coach with equipment, team medical supplies, and uniforms prior to the season and ensuring that each coach returns all equipment, unused supplies, and uniforms using a checklist.

Events

  1. Scheduling the use of all athletic facilities and fields for athletic games and practices.
  2. Ensuring that all playing surfaces are properly conditioned for all home games.
  3. Arrange for officials for all interscholastic events and make arrangements for payment of officials.
  4. Being present for all home/away athletic contests as assigned by the Athletic Director.
  5. Arranging for employees for all home games, including ticket sellers and takers, police officers, custodians, timekeepers, scorekeepers, etc.
  6. Arranging for the availability of medical supplies and the presence of an athletic trainer at all home contests.
  7. Assuming responsibility for the cancellation of games as circumstances require to protect athletic participants and district resources, and rescheduling in the event of cancellation.

Transportation

  1. Arranging and confirming bus or other transportation for athletic participants.
  2. Verifying that all participants have proper permission forms for alternative transportation if requested.
  3. Communicating the athletic transportation policy to all coaches responsible for away game transportation.

Communication

  1. Conducting athlete, parent, and coach meetings as needed.
  2. Representing the schools and district at NCHSAA meetings and events.
  3. Working with coaches to ensure all student-athletes and parents know the rules and regulations.
  4. Acting as a liaison between coaches and the athletic booster club.
  5. Maintaining an open and constant line of communication with the Middle School or High School Athletic Director to fulfill both the middle school and high school athletic programs.
  6. Developing, reviewing, and revising the athletic handbook and any athletic agreements that each athlete, parent, and coach must abide by, with recommendations from administration and coaches, and subject to school district approval.
  7. Promoting and modeling good sportsmanship and maintaining an active program that welcomes competing teams, guests, and game officials.
  8. Coordinating publicity and news releases to the media and the district communication committee with approval from the district Marketing Specialist and/or Public Information Officer.
  9. Arranging for videotaping of key school athletic events.
  10. Following the chain of command.

Supervision

  1. Interviewing and making recommendations for renewing coaches and hiring new coaches.
  2. Providing orientation and in-service programs for coaches.
  3. Working with the Athletic Director and Principal on problems of discipline concerning coaches.

Terms of Employment

  1. Year-round position subject to the responsibilities of the position.
  2. Hours are subject to the responsibilities of the position and may frequently require evening and weekend duty.
  3. Clear criminal background check.
  4. Verification of health to perform the job.
  5. Valid NC certification (preferred).
  6. Valid driver’s license - CDL with P and S endorsements or the ability to obtain such a license.
