General Statement of Job
An employee in this class is responsible for providing excellent customer service, scheduling and supervising circulation desk staff, assisting patrons with various services, maintaining circulation procedures, maintaining hold systems and overdue materials, supervising volunteers, and ensuring a safe and pleasant environment for library users and staff.
This role requires significant public contact and is performed in an inside environment under regular supervision. Work is supervised by the branch manager and is evaluated for customer service effectiveness and accuracy of work activities through observation, conference, patron feedback and annual performance evaluations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Responsible for training, supervising, scheduling, and evaluating circulation staff and volunteers.
- Manages patron services by supervising circulation staff procedures, registering new patrons, locating materials for patrons, providing readers’ advisory, responding to general inquiries, providing reference information as requested, and instructing patrons on use of library materials.
- Maintains holds system by pulling items placed on hold, processing holds and developing procedures for contacting patrons with items on hold and clearing out-of-date holds.
- Balances the point-of-sale system and processes received monies for deposit and reports.
- Ensures accurate patron and reference services using the library’s ILS, OPAC systems, and reference resources.
- Ensures accurate library shelving through staff training, supervision, and regular shelf reading.
- Answers the telephone and provides reference information to remote patrons, as well as referring and transferring calls.
- Maintains and supervises library functions, including emptying book drops, keeping shelves in orderly condition, shifting books, and maintaining periodicals.
- Assists with library programs and/or displays, as directed.
- Maintains Granville County Library System transit, ensuring proper circulation of county holds across branches.
- Utilizes various types of office equipment including computers, cash register, scanners, copiers, and fax machines.
Recruitment and Selection Guidelines
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of library procedures, methods, materials, practices and ILS and OPAC systems.
- Working knowledge of computers, mobile devices, printers, copiers, scanners, and other equipment in the library and ability to help patrons with these devices.
- Working knowledge of basic mathematics and customer service.
- Working knowledge of the theory, missions, and objectives of a public library system.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, and patrons.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move materials and push book trucks.
Desirable Training and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree with supervisory and library or customer service experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
- Degree in library science strongly preferred but not required.
