Primary Purpose Of Position

The State Library of North Carolina (SLNC) is seeking an enthusiastic and driven individual to join our team! The Circulation Assistant supports the mission of the State Library of North Carolina – Accessible Books and Library Services in providing services to North Carolinians who cannot read standard print due to visual or physical disability. Through warehousing and shipping audio, print and other mediums to patrons, this position enables our patrons to receive materials in a timely manner.

Key Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Work successfully as part of a team to support circulation and maintenance of library materials.
  • Use the library’s integrated library system (ILS), KLAS, daily to enter data accurately and check in and out materials.
  • Daily physical work to circulate library materials such as braille books, large print books, and digital cartridges.
  • Sort, separate, and shelve in order based on library classification systems and other defined guidelines.
  • Safely operate a 2.5-ton delivery truck to deliver library mail.
  • Communicate with patrons via telephone as part of an ongoing Overdue Notices process.

Position/Physical Requirements

  • This position's job duties require the ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • This position's job duties require the ability to do the following: climbing, crawling, crouching, kneeling, standing, pushing, lifting, and pulling with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • This position's job duties require close visual acuity to view labels on library materials, mailing labels, and computer screen with or without reasonable accommodation.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

Qualified Candidates Must Have Or Be Able To

  • Demonstrated experience with office or work unit procedures, methods, and/or practices.
  • Demonstrated experience operating a 2.5-ton truck in city traffic and backing vehicle into tight parking spaces and/or loading docks.
  • Demonstrated experience using specialized computer applications and/or peripheral equipment.

Licensure or Credentials Required:

  • Valid Driver's License or have the ability to obtain for employment.

Management Prefers:

  • Demonstrated experience communicating effectively in person and/or by telephone.
  • Demonstrated experience following oral and written instructions and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully as part of a team, using courtesy and tact in all interactions.
  • Demonstrated experience performing repetitive tasks quickly and accurately.
  • Demonstrated warehouse or shipping and receiving experience.

The State Library of North Carolina Accessible Books and Library Services (SNLC–ABLS) provides library programs and services to North Carolinians who cannot read standard print due to a visual, physical, or learning disability. The SLNC-ABLS is a part of the network of regional libraries operated by the Library of Congress National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) that performs the functions of a public library. The library circulates 800,000 volumes annually to over 12,000 eligible patrons through special deposit collections in libraries, hospitals, rest homes, and other institutions and the direct delivery of specially designed playback equipment and books and magazines in large print, Braille, and audio formats to individuals directly free of charge via U.S. Mail. The library manages a volunteer services program, records local North Carolina publications and magazines for circulation, publishes and distributes quarterly library newsletters, and sponsors reading and other library programs with support from the Friends of the SLNC-ABLS. SLNC-ABLS is committed to removing barriers to access and ensuring that collections and services reflect diverse perspectives.
