The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii is a nonprofit policy research organization that seeks to educate people about the values of individual liberty, economic freedom and accountable government.
Through the publication of accurate and timely research and commentaries, as well as by organizing events, conferences and seminars, the institute informs Hawaii’s policymakers, news media and the general public about key public policy issues. Since its founding in 2001, it has helped provide the intellectual foundations for many local policy debates.
Position Summary
The Director of Development will report to the President and CEO and be responsible for building a department that can achieve aggressive growth in revenues.
The Director of Development will be responsible for planning and managing the organization’s fundraising program including major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations, planned giving, special events, prospect research, stewardship, development communications and information systems.
Preference will be given to applicants who identify with the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii’s core principles of individual liberty, economic freedom and accountable government.
Support of the CEO and Board leaders’ major gift work is a critical component of the work. This position is individually responsible for identifying, qualifying, engaging, soliciting and stewarding 50 to 100 donors and prospective donors capable of giving major gifts over time and for engaging and soliciting prospective donors capable of giving $1,000 to $25,000 annually.
This position is responsible for managing a staff of three, including hiring, providing orientation, coaching, directing, monitoring and evaluating each member of the team. The position serves as a senior member of the management team, responsible for helping shape the organization’s future.
Specific responsibilities
>> Developing and implementing a multi-year strategic, comprehensive plan with overarching, measurable goals for the department and specific measurable goals for each aspect of the program. In addition, the plan includes: A three-year name-by-name table of gifts, case for supporting the organization and specific fundraising priorities, metrics for analyzing and monitoring work, role of the CEO, board and staff, integrated communications plan, calendars for annual giving, special events, marketing pieces and stewardship.
>> Meeting agreed upon financial revenue goals; monitoring progress and reporting monthly or quarterly on progress against goals; analyzing trends and making adjustments throughout the year.
>> Personally, managing a portfolio of 50 to 100 donors and prospective donors, such as individuals, corporations and foundations.
>> Being responsible for how assigned donors and prospective donors will be solicited for their annual gift.
>> Developing and implementing a legacy giving program.
>> Supervising donor research and management, donor stewardship, information systems and report generation.
>> Supporting the CEO’s and board leaders’ major gift work with top donors and prospective donors.
>> Working closely with marketing and communications so that donors, grantors and customers are receiving integrated and appropriate messaging.
>> Serving as a member of the management team by staying abreast of organization-wide issues and contributing to the overall management of the organization.
>> Maintaining a comprehensive calendar of development activities and grant deadlines.
>> Identifying aligned foundations, building relationships with foundation staff and authoring grant proposals and timely reports championing the Institute’s work.
Skills and Qualifications
>> Alignment with the vision and mission of the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii.
>> Five years of development experience preferred.
>> A proven track record as a major gift officer and manager or comparable, transferable experiences.
>> Excellent communications skills emphasizing the ability to listen and hear others.
>> Ability to draft compelling grant proposals and donor communications.
>> Experience with Salesforce software and online payment platforms.
>> A keen understanding of fundraising best practices, systems and models.
>> Empathy and a strong will to succeed.
>> Is a strategic thinker.
>> Is technologically adept.
>> Has a bachelor’s degree.
>> Ability to reliably commute to the Institute’s main office in Downtown Honolulu.
Compensation and Benefits
>> Annual salary commensurate with experience.
>> Comprehensive employee-benefits program, including, a full medical/dental/vision package.
>> Retirement plan after two years of consecutive employment with an employer match of 3%, subject to the plan’s terms and revisions.
>> 13 working days of paid time off (PTO) including sick days; however, PTO is available for use only after six consecutive months of employment. PTO may not be accumulated or carried over years.
