What are the responsibilities and job description for the Facilities Maintenance I position at Grays Harbor County?
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
To provide maintenance and custodial services for the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds, Tourism and Parks Department on a year-round basis and to assist as necessary during events. To assist the Facility Supervisor and/or Facilities Maintenance II position in addressing facility needs. To assure the effective and efficient use of department personnel, funds, materials and time.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
- Maintain department facilities, equipment, and grounds in optimum condition within budgetary constraints. To provide daily security checks of all buildings and sections of the Fairgrounds, as well as to open and close gates at times designated by Fairgrounds, Tourism and Parks Management.
- Assist Fairgrounds, Tourism and Parks Management, Facilities Supervisor and/or Maintenance II positions in the coordination of activities and events at the County Fairgrounds in a manner that will ensure optimum usage of resources and revenue collection throughout the year.
3)Work with diverse user groups (4-H, FFA, Open Class, Grange, Horse, Cattle, Poultry, Small Animal, Concessionaires, Commercial, and Others) to promote a quality Fair and Interim Events, as well as full utilization of the Fairgrounds and Parks facilities.
4)Lead part-time and/or temporary grounds and facility personnel.
5)Collect fees and complete receipts for facility rentals, camping and other use by clients, as required.
6)Provide and perform grounds keeping and custodial services, facility improvements, maintenance and repairs, as well as other services as necessary. Custodial duties include but are not limited to the cleaning and stocking of facility restrooms, cleaning floors and the disposal of garbage.
7)Operate equipment including, but not limited to: dump trucks, loaders, mowers, tractors, backhoe, grader, dump & wheel packer, trencher, forklift, water tanker and various farm equipment.
8)Assist fire, police, and ambulance crew in any manner possible.
9)Maintain equipment and facilities owned and/or operated by the department in good operating condition.
10)Assist with the coordination and staffing of part-time temporary help during events which may take place on evenings and weekends.
11)Other duties as assigned by the Manager, Event Coordinator, Facilities Supervisor, Maintenance
II position, and/or Pavilion Coordinator of the Department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of methods, tools, and materials used in building maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures.
- Skilled in attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to organize work and meet established deadlines.
- Ability to work flexible hours and overtime as dictated by the event schedule.
- Ability to operate hand power cleaning and polishing equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work in a safe, efficient, and cooperative manner.
- Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid, CPR, and Defensive Driving certifications.
- Ability to life fifty (50) lbs. minimum and be able to maintain standing for long periods.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with coworkers, supervisors and the general public.
- Ability to pass a criminal history background check.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Washington State driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Two (2) years’ building maintenance, construction or janitorial experience.
Desired Experience:
- One (1) year experience at a Fairgrounds or other like public facility is desired.
- One (1) year experience and working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and masonry is preferred.
- Experience in the operation, repair and maintenance of farm machinery and heavy equipment is also desired.
- Class A or B CDL endorsement is desired.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is generally in the field, on the Fairgrounds and other County properties. Some office work may be required. Work requires being exposed to all types of weather conditions from sunny and pleasant to severely inclement. Work situations will be situated on a variety of terrain conditions ranging from gentle to severely adverse and rugged. Working at heights may also be required from time to time.
WORK HOURS:
Work hours are as per Working Labor Agreement covering the Courthouse employees. This position shall require regular workdays on Saturday and/or Sunday. Typical schedule for this position shall be Thursday thru Monday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Hours and days scheduled will be flexible to accommodate clients and events and will include variable shifts. Some shifts may extend past midnight. Overtime hours will be necessary for some events.
