Protection & Control Engineer Senior
Position Overview
This position performs electrical engineering duties for the Engineering Department of the Grand River Dam Authority as assigned by the Chief Engineer.
Supervision Received :
Reports directly to the Chief Engineer or designated supervisor.
Supervised Personnel :
Normally does not supervise any other positions. May assume specific temporary supervisory duties for certain project functions and / or training duties.
Essential job functions include, but are not limited to :
- Performs engineering analysis, calculations, relay coordination studies, and other duties associated with relay applications, operation, and settings for protection of substation and transmission facilities.
- Develop engineering designs for projects of all sizes and complexities :
- o Generates & peer reviews single line diagrams, communication diagrams, AC and DC schematics, wiring diagrams, relay settings, bills of material and cable schedules.
- o Produce cost estimates, project schedules, and execution plans for assigned projects. Draft scopes of work for engineering and construction contractors.
- o Develop data sheets and specifications for equipment.
- o Bid engineering and construction services and recommend award.
- o Select equipment vendors.
- Creates specifications; prepares bid documents; evaluates bids received; prepares and presents reports and recommendations as required for purchase of materials, equipment, services, and miscellaneous items associated with relaying systems and other assigned projects.
- Assists in the design of substation and transmission system projects in the areas of relaying and the equipment required to perform those functions. Provides technical expertise and representation at review meetings, as required.
- Assists in troubleshooting and may supervise repair activities as assigned.
- May assist in the training of relay technicians for installation, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance procedures involving new relaying equipment.
- Coordinates or verifies work of outside contractors and / or engineering firms concerning relay design activities; monitors work orders, project progress, change orders, and contractor payments of assigned areas.
- May represent GRDA in regional organizations concerning relaying and / or relaying activities.
- Creates, organizes, and maintains records for assigned oversight areas of department.
- Assists with the update of departmental construction standards and other departmental records.
- Perform protection coordination studies for both overcurrent and distance relays.
- Maintains proficiency in modern industry trends regarding the various types of protective relays and understanding how they are applied to the various types of zones of protection.
- Uses Aspen One Liner, SEL AcSELerator or Grid Configurator, Microsoft Office Products including Outlook, Word, Teams and Excel, Enoserve PowerBase, eQuorum ImageSite DMS, and other minor software typical to the group for performance of engineering analysis, calculations, and design.
- After-hours work may be required under system emergency or storm conditions.
