DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves performing a variety of activities in relation to all biomedical equipment utilized in patient care at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). This class differs from that of Biomedical Repair Technician by virtue of the complexity of work activities and level of responsibility. Work is performed under the general supervision of higher-ranking Biomedical Services personnel with leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. May exercise supervision over lower-level Biomedical Services personnel. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Performs a variety of routine, complex and highly specialized work involved in the installation, maintenance, servicing, modification, troubleshooting and calibration of all biomedical equipment utilizing specialized test equipment and in accordance with specifications;
- May be assigned to serve as a team lead for one of the following areas, including, but not limited to: dialysis, monitoring and life support;
- Interprets engineering and vendor information, schematic diagrams and graphical illustrations;
- Assists in the support of a systematic preventive maintenance program for biomedical equipment;
- Performs troubleshooting, diagnoses and performs corrective actions on biomedical equipment, software and internal electronic circuitry in accordance with specified requirements;
- Makes necessary calculations for computing circuit elements necessary to adjust circuitry to specified requirements as required;
- Documents all stages of biomedical equipment lifecycle from installation through corrective and preventative maintenance actions to removal from service for all biomedical equipment and accessories as required;
- Informs supervisor of equipment deficiencies and advises on corrective course of action as required;
- Determines methods used to test biomedical equipment for optimal functionality;
- Provides technical training, checks the work of and serves as a mentor to lower-level Biomedical Services personnel;
- Ensures work is performed in accordance with applicable safety standards, policies and procedures for areas including, but not limited to, quality assurance, infection control safety, environment of care and patient experience;
- Provides technical assistance and instruction to ECMCC personnel in the operation and maintenance of biomedical equipment and accessories;
- Provides recommendations regarding the purchase or lease of biomedical equipment, related accessories and contractual services.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the tools, terminology, procedures and equipment required for the installation, operation, maintenance, repair, testing, calibration and inspection of biomedical equipment; thorough knowledge of the potential hazards and applicable safety standards associated with performing work on biomedical equipment utilized in patient care; thorough knowledge of the clinical applications of biomedical equipment; thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of electronic circuitry as it relates to biomedical equipment; ability to install, operate, maintain and repair various types of biomedical equipment; ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and perform corrective actions on defective biomedical equipment; ability to read and interpret applicable biomedical equipment specifications, diagrams, etc.; ability to read color codes on wiring and electronic components; ability to perform technical training on biomedical equipment; ability to work independently; ability to prioritize work assignments by organizational need and timeliness; ability to maintain and organize data; ability to work flexible hours; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; ability to utilize a variety of electronic software applications; sound professional judgment; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of an Associate's Degree in Biomedical Electronics, Electronics, Electrical Engineering or closely related field and three (3) years of experience* in the installation, maintenance and repair of electronic equipment, of which one (1) year involved the installation, maintenance and repair of biomedical equipment; or:
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of electronic equipment, of which one (1) year involved the installation, maintenance and repair of biomedical equipment; or:
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
NOTE: Possession of a Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Electronics, Electronics, Electrical Engineering or closely related field may be substituted for the one (1) year of required experience involving installation, maintenance and repair of biomedical equipment.
