Epidemiologist I

The Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center is seeking two Epidemiologists, dependent upon experience and qualifications. One position will be in our Grand Rapids, Michigan office, the other position in our Green Bay, Wisconsin office. The Epidemiologist I will serve as an entry-level epidemiologist responsible for carrying out a range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities related to the surveillance, detection and prevention of diseases and injuries. Working as a team member, under the direction of the Senior Epidemiologist, conduct routine epidemiologic functions, technical assistance to Tribal Nations, and provide training on the basic principles of epidemiology as well as other important public health matters. Attendance as scheduled is an essential function of this position. Frequent travel is required to meet the needs of the position.

Principal Duties:

  • The Epidemiologist I will provide epidemiologic functions such as analysis, collection, and interpretation of Federal, State and Tribal health information, to the Indian Health Services (IHS) Bemidji service area.
  • Participates in developing epidemiologic investigations/studies using scientific, technical methods and practices to identify and evaluate health conditions.
  • Aids with health data collection, using data for program planning, and program evaluation in areas of chronic disease, infectious disease, maternal and child health, and others as defined by the needs of the service area.
  • Acquire data for, produce, and update community health profiles for the Tribes in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota.
  • Perform analysis by using epidemiologic statistical techniques to interpret and analyze.
  • Use surveillance systems to collect disease and health outcome data.
  • Present scientific advice in assigned programs or issues, to various partners where required and directed.
  • Conduct literature reviews and assist in preparing reports using behavioral science, demographic and epidemiologic techniques, and evaluation.
  • Make oral presentations to diverse audiences, both scientific and non-scientific.
  • Reacts to requests for information from community partners and follows its progression through to completion including written and oral responses.
  • Work with State public health staff and Indian Health Service staff to acquire data needed for health profiles and to coordinate public health training and initiatives with Tribes.
  • Coordinate with other Epidemiologists serving Tribes in the Bemidji area to produce regional data products, write semi-annual and annual reports, provide training, and coordinate program advisory committee.
  • Participate in development of work agreements with state, county, and local public health agencies and medical providers.
  • Participate in research projects as assigned by the Senior Epidemiologist and the Epidemiology Center Director.
  • Follow direction from senior staff and integrate perspective. The position may work on topic areas including but not limited to breastfeeding support and promotion; COVID-19 mitigation; COVID-19, influenza, adult, and childhood vaccinations; Emergency preparedness; HIV and STIs; Intimate partner violence; Maternal and child health; substance use disorder; Suicide.

This is a full-time exempt position working Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm, with a worksite location in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This is not a remote position. This position, based on skills and experience, has a salary of $60,000 annually with benefits including Annual Leave, Personal Leave and Holiday Pay; Health, Dental, Life & AD&D, STD and LTD Insurance, FSA and 401(k) Retirement Plan. This position requires frequent travel for the purposes of attending community and program related activities. Background screening required pre-hire.

Qualifications:

Required: master’s degree in public health with emphasis in epidemiology or analysis and assessment. Preferred: Experience working with Native American Tribal Governments, Tribal organization and/or not-for-profit agency in epidemiology. Ability to work independently and as a program team member. Evaluation experience is preferred. Individual must possess: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; professional demeanor and appearance; problem solving skills; ability to manage time effectively; self-motivation skills; work effectively under pressure; ability to build positive work relationships with internal and external customers; ability to interact professionally with a wide variety of people; speak in front of groups. Individuals must be able to address a wide range of intellectual and practical problems, apply statistical calculations to findings, and the ability to compose complex business correspondence (reports, health profiles.) Requires a high level of confidentiality. Must possess a valid driver’s license and/or reliable transportation with adequate insurance and ability to travel.
