This summer, we will be welcoming hundreds of cruise ship guests to Sault St. Marie and Great Lakes Shore Excursions is seeking passionate, fun, and highly energetic people to assist with these cruise ship arrivals & showcasing the region. Positions are seasonal with a 5-8 hour time commitment on the following dates:
May 31
June 6, 27
July 3
August 8, 14
Candidates are requested to be available at least 5 of the 6 listed dates.
Job Responsibilities
- Applicants must be able to think on their feet, be flexible, have a wonderful sense of humor and a deep passion for the community.
- Communicate and interact well to foster and nurture personal relationships with all guests and community partners alike
- Provide accurate directions and recommendations to guests
- Learn key talking points, and actively seek out information and interesting facts to share with tour attendees
- Calm under pressure, not easily flustered, quick on your feet
- Complete post-tour duties such as providing a post-tour debrief to dock lead
Job Qualifications/Requirements
- Our ideal candidates will have a theater, PR, marketing or other presentation-based background. Previous experience in the tourism community is a plus but by no means required!
- Must have a very high-energy level, you will play a critical role in the impression of the city to guests.
- Ability to communicate and connect quickly with guests so that they feel they are part of something special.
- Have a natural sense of humor, ability to improvise, and make people feel at ease immediately.
- Enjoy working in a flexible environment with little to no direct supervision.
- Strong knowledge of the regions history, tourist attractions, and how to navigate the area
- Tour Guides must have an ability to memorize historical facts while also being able to adapt said script to the needs of each tour
- Must be able to be on your feet and walking constantly for 3 - 4 hours straight in various weather elements (sun, heat, cold, rain, snow)
- Must have a cell phone to communicate and a watch to stay on time.
Compensation
We pay a $30 hourly wage, plus any cash gratuities received are yours to keep. Besides the cruise dates, you'll be paid a stipend for training and tour practice time.
