AIRPORT MAINTENANCE MECHANIC
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this position is responsible for participating in a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in maintaining airport runways, buildings and adjacent areas. The work is similar to other building maintenance positions in that skill in a variety of trades is required. However, Airport Maintenance Mechanics require specialized knowledge in airport maintenance, operations and safety. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Airport Maintenance Supervisor. Incumbents are required to act as part of the Airport’s Fire/Rescue Response Unit. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Participates in maintenance, carpentry, electrical, masonry,
painting, heating system maintenance and may apply pesticides;
Performs routine maintenance and repair of grounds and buildings;
Participates in the maintenance and repair of airport service
vehicles;
Participates in regular maintenance inspections of airfield runway,
taxiways, lights and security, and facilities;
Participates in aircraft rescue and firefighting training;
Responds and participates in aircraft rescue, firefighting alerts and
other associated emergency response activities
Maintains records and forwards reports of activities and airfield
conditions;
Operates snow and ice removal vehicles and equipment such as plows,
brooms and snow blowers (both heavy and light);
Operates a variety of tools and equipment such as chainsaws, welders,
paint sprayers, drills and grinders;
Maintains the sensitive airfield navigational systems;
Performs fuel handling and aircraft related duties such as: baggage handling, aircraft movement, inspections, and related services;
Performs other related duties necessary to maintain the operation of all airport services as needed or as directed by Airport Administration.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the principles, methods and tools used in airport
maintenance;
Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and safety
precautions of one or more of the mechanical or construction
trades;
Good knowledge of airport safety procedures and security regulations;
Ability to operate a variety of motor equipment;
Ability to prepare reports and maintain records;
Ability to get along with others;
Ability to communicate clearly on two-way radios;
Ability to operate mechanical equipment and related airport
vehicles;
Ability to identify potentially hazardous conditions;
Ability to operate tools and equipment requiring physical effort;
Ability to meet the standards for Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting,
which includes the ability to pass the required annual
medical evaluation (as per 14 CFR part 139.319 of the
Federal Aviation Association standards for Aircraft Rescue
And Fire Fighting);
Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions;
Willingness to work rotating shifts which may include nights,
weekends and holidays;
Willingness to work overtime as required;
Manual dexterity;
Initiative and resourcefulness.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession
of a high school equivalency diploma and either:
A) Two years of experience in airport maintenance or operations;
OR
B) Two years of experience in building construction, facilities
maintenance, maintenance and/or repair in one or more of the
standard trades such as: carpentry, plumbing, electrical work,
HVAC, masonry, professional landscaping etc.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1) Possession of the appropriate level Motor Vehicle
Operator's License at the time of appointment.
2) Current Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
and Emergency Cardiac Care within 120 days of employment.
3) Possession of Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF)
Certificate within six months of employment, and yearly
re-certification, to include physical standards.(Failure
to obtain and/or maintain certification could result in
termination of employment.)
