What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accountant II position at GREATER DES MOINES HABITAT FOR HUMANITY?
This position is responsible for completing the payroll operations for Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity. This position will work closely with the HR department to ensure all employees are paid accurately and timely. This position is also responsible for reviewing overhead costs and allocating costs to programs and projects. This position will work closely with the construction services and land development teams to determine total costs for construction projects. This position will also complete financial analysis for insourcing, outsourcing, and cost reduction opportunities.
Payroll Responsibilities:
- Oversee employee paychecks: Calculate net salaries considering deductions and withholdings.
- Ensure accuracy: Update payroll and tax documents to maintain accuracy.
- Maintain records: Update the general ledger and payroll files.
- Monitor leaves: Track paid and unpaid leaves.
- Process overtime and holiday deductions: Handle additional earnings and deductions.
- Answer employee queries: Assist employees with payroll-related questions.
- Payroll Reports: Provide payroll reports to management for review; complete payroll reports for annual audit workpapers and annual workers comp renewal and audit.
Cost Responsibilities:
- Overhead Cost Allocations: conduct studies to allocate direct and indirect overhead costs to each program, including maintaining salary allocations in the payroll system.
- Total Project Costs: complete financial analysis to determine total costs for construction projects, project budgets for grants, and tracking actual costs vs budget.
- Insourcing and Outsourcing Analysis: complete cost studies to support insourcing and outsourcing decisions.
- Overhead Cost Reductions: review current overhead spending and identify areas to reduce cost. Review existing service contracts and identify opportunities for cost reduction.

- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
- Demonstrated experience in financial management concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to give and receive detailed information in person, over the telephone, and at meetings. Ability to exchange ideas and convey detailed information accurately to staff, volunteers and others.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required with high-level expertise in Excel. PowerBI experience preferred but not required.
- Capability to use general ledger system (QuickBooks) and payroll system (Paylocity).
