GENERAL SCOPE OF DUTIES:

The Greater North Dakota Chamber (GNDC) is the largest statewide business advocacy association in North Dakota and works to make our business climate the best in the nation.

As a Government Affairs Specialist, you'll advocate for policies that cultivate a thriving economy. By tracking and analyzing critical legislative developments, you’ll provide insights that can shape strategic decisions. Join us in this impactful role to help empower the business community and ensure that businesses are well-informed and engaged in the policy-making process.

Duties and Responsibilities:

PUBLIC POLICY

  • Represent GNDC at legislative hearings or other public policy meetings.
  • Monitor, research, and analyze the impacts of proposed state legislation and regulations on GNDC membership.
  • Prepare legislative & regulatory testimony, analyses, and reports.
  • Prepare communication materials related to legislation or policy efforts.
  • Track legislative bills important to North Dakota’s business climate.
  • Work closely with trade association representatives, local chambers, and lobbyists to assure legislative and policy support, as directed.
  • Respond to member policy inquiries as directed.
  • Assist with scheduling, creating agendas, and taking meeting minutes for GNDC’s Policy Councils & Committees in support of the policy development process.
  • Assist in developing policy-related surveys and communications.
  • Create and maintain legislative and policy-related databases as needed.

CAMPAIGN

  • Assist with the administration & coordination of GNDC’s Political Action Committee, including fundraising and events.
  • Coordinate candidate training & business issue education efforts.
  • Assist with initiated measure campaigns as directed.

PARTNER

  • Coordinate GNDC’s activities with local chambers, including communication and meetings.
  • Assist with coalition building & outreach
  • Coordinate GNDC-led coalition meetings
  • Support ND Manufacturing Council efforts, including Manufacturing Day, events, and other outreach

OTHER DUTIES

  • Assist in set-up, preparation, speaker requests, & outreach for special events, meetings, and presentations
  • Assist with member recruitment and retention efforts as directed
  • Assist with developing policy-related website content.
  • Meet established deadlines for timely completion of projects and assigned tasks
  • Other duties as assigned

Desirable Skills & Abilities:

  • Consistent follow-through with attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Interest and knowledge of politics and the legislative process at the state level
  • Recognize sensitive/political situations and act professionally.
  • Capable of effectively coordinating simultaneous projects or communications
  • Self-starter and work independently
  • Able to work in small team environment in an open-concept office space

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public relations, communications or a related field
  • Willing to become registered lobbyist
  • Experience and comfort with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams/Zoom, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Generally, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday (though occasionally evening meetings and overnight travel will occur)
  • At times longer hours may be necessary to meet member and project needs
  • Reliable transportation to arrive at work
  • Valid driver’s license is mandatory
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds
  • Ability/willing to travel in state occasionally.

REPORTS TO: VP of Government Affairs

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Salary negotiable with potential bonus opportunities
