JOB DESCRIPTION: Medical Receptionist
SUPERVISION: Reports to the Practice Administrator
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:(This list may not include all of the duties assigned).
- Screen potential and existing patients, by telephone and in person, to determine appropriate appointment time; alert physician of patients that require immediate attention
- Schedule patient appointments following office protocols
- Check patients in for appointments; verify insurance and demographic information at each visit, collect co-payments and patient balances
- Scan insurance card and Driver’s License along with any other needed information into electronic health record
- Place chart, other medical records and (if applicable) hospital/ER reports in rack for physician consideration
- Inform patients of delays or other situations that may result in a longer than normal wait
- Describe policies and procedures to new and established patients
- Check out patient after they've seen the physician; schedule return visit as needed
- When patient is referred to another office, have medical records release signed and gather needed information for patient to take with to appointment (i.e. records)
- Check samples and obtain physician signature as needed
- Copy, scan and mail documents and forms as needed
- Update patient charts by inserting medical records or other documentation related to their care
- Answer phones; take and relay messages; refer callers to other departments as needed
- Maintain a current list of managed care plans accepted by the practice
- Remain current on medical records issues including documentation, record release, confidentiality, record keeping and retrieval
- Witness informed consent process upon physician or coworker’s request
- Inform all staff and Office Manager of dates the office is closed
- Keep the reception/waiting area clean at all times; discard old and torn magazines and broken toys or books
- Clean and maintain the front desk area, empty all trash canisters, maintain clean break room, vacuum daily
- Attend and participate in staff and front desk meetings
- Any duties or projects as assigned by the Office Manager
Position Requirements:
- Knowledge of medical practice procedures and functions preferred
- Knowledge of insurance and billing procedures including Medicare, Medicaid and Managed Care Plans
- Previous experience with telephone systems and office equipment including copiers, adding machines, fax machines and computers
- Knowledge of medical records policies including state and federal compliance
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred, but not required
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Ability to develop and maintain effective and professional working relationships with patients, medical staff, coworkers and the public
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
- Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures
- Ability to work with a diverse population, demonstrating patience and professionalism
- 6 months previous experience in a medical office or clinic setting; family practice experience preferred.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Lifting and carrying of patient charts, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing, walking and sitting for extensive periods of time
- Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Requires the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and orally
- Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours
- Requires a professional attitude to deal with patients with an unpleasant aspect of illness
Education: High school diploma or GED required
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: From $15.00 per hour
Expected hours: 36 – 40 per week
