Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:

  • Provides consultation on behalf of patients referred for evaluation and treatment recommendations
  • Documents and maintains accurate records pertaining to the indications, rationale and progress of the patient’s treatment and care.
  • Provides attendance and supervision of hyperbaric medicine patients in accordance with both the hospital medical staff credentialing and local CMS fiscal intermediary policies.
  • Provides documentary evidence into the patient record that validates attendance and supervision.
  • Is immediately available to manage patient emergencies that may occur before, during or after treatment while the patient is in the hyperbaric medicine department.
  • Maintains communication with referring medical providers
  • Provides the appropriate discharge, follow-up and referral as indicated.
  • Remains immediately available to manage patient emergencies that may occur during the patient’s time within the hyperbaric facility.
  • Communicates with the Hyperbaric Safety Director regarding any safety-related issues.
  • Participates in monthly hyperbaric facility safety drills.
  • Maintain currency with all Safety Notices.
  • Education: Provides patient education and teaching as needed.
  • Accountable for maintaining professional competencies.
  • Supports unit education through a variety of activities, such as precepting, unit inservices, and may also assist in organizational educational programs.
  • Is accountable for effective communication with patients/family, care team members and physicians regarding the patient’s progress on the plan of care and response to treatment.
  • Participates in the orientation of new employees. Works in partnership with members of the team.
  • Implements plan of care assuring progression toward quality outcomes. Participates in the development and monitoring of action plans to ensure performance improvement and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborates with physicians and team members regarding changes in patient’s condition and revises the plan of care utilizing input of team members. Supports roles of all coworkers.
  • Acts as a resource to the interdisciplinary team members for coordination of the plan of care, pathway, and discharge planning. Maintains effective relationships with primary and consulting physicians.


Skills, Education and Experience:

  • Must be certified as a Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist or Physician Assistant by an approved certifying body.
  • Must have valid state licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.
  • Specifically privileged to practice clinical wound care and hyperbaric medicine in the sponsoring medical institution(s) under the process delineated by the institution’s medical staff or credentialing committee.
  • Must have a current DEA license in the state of practice.
  • Must hold current (BLS) and (ACLS).
  • Will be expected to work towards documentation of successful completing of a 40-hour Introductory Hyperbaric Medicine Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) – approved Course and will take on HBOT safety director responsibilities in the future.
  • Should have an interest in learning, practicing, and maintaining competency in the field of hyperbaric medicine.
  • Documentation of a minimum of 12 credit hours of Category 1 Continuing Medical Education (CME) in hyperbaric medicine-related topics for each 12-month period of hyperbaric medicine practice. This does not include initial training year.
  • Should have a working understanding of the codes and regulations that govern the operation of a hyperbaric medicine facility.
  • Should participate in professional organization.
  • Will be required to obtain certification in Wound Care (OMS, CWCN-AP) within one year of accepting the position.
