The Maintenance Manager is a management position that is directly responsible for all maintenance employees, training and maintenance of equipment in the planer / sawmill and leads safety and quality programs within the department, while minimizing costs and executing any company plan of action with the assistance of the Plant Operations Manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Motivate, develop and direct maintenance employees as they work
Ensure safety of all employees by supporting safety education efforts and enforcement of safety rules
Read and analyze charts, work orders, production schedules, and other records and reports, in order to determine production requirements and to evaluate current production estimates and outputs
Plan and establish work schedules, assignments, and production sequences to meet production goals
Inspect materials, products, or equipment to detect defects or malfunctions
Demonstrate equipment operations, work and safety procedures to new employees, and / or assign new employees to experienced workers for training
Observe work, and monitor gauges, dials, and other indicators to ensure that operators conform to production or processing standards
Consistently help meet production goals in both planer and sawmills by performing preventative and regular maintenance in a swift but safe manner and be accountable for maintenance expenses
Monitor quality of product make quick effective decisions to correct flaws
Monitor / participate in action planning process
Enforce company disciplinary policies and procedures
Perform and document performance counselling in accordance with company policy and as needed to identify deficiencies and accomplishments
Monitor and address work hours (overtime) on a daily / weekly basis
Confer with management and / or subordinates to resolve worker problems, complaints, or grievances
Conduct regular maintenance crew meetings
Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
Determine schedules, sequences, and assignments for work activities, based on work priority, quantity of equipment and skill of personnel.
Conduct or arrange for worker training in safety, repair, and maintenance techniques, operational procedures, or equipment use.
Perform all other maintenance functions as necessary or as requested
Attend / conduct other meetings as needed
Confer with other supervisors to coordinate operations and activities within or between departments
Work with Human Resources on placement and job placement of maintenance personnel
Under supervision, inspect or test damaged machine parts, and mark defective areas or advise supervisors of repair needs
Under supervision, reassemble machines after the completion of repair or maintenance work
Under supervision, start machines and observe mechanical operation to determine efficiency and to detect problems
Under supervision, install equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications
Clean workstation and surrounding areas making sure it is clean and free of debris
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Previous management experience or equivalent education
Understanding of correct lumber manufacturing processes
Ability to analyze data to determine performance trends
Problem solving skills
Computer literate
Working knowledge of planer / sawmill / yard machinery and tools; including their design, uses, repair and maintenance
Ability to clearly & effectively communicate issues to peers, subordinates & senior management
Ability to lead and work well with other supervisors & operators
Work well both independently and as part of a team
Ability to train others on operation and repair of equipment
Ability to monitor / assess performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action
Ability to effectively manage one's own time and the time of others
Ability to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions to determine causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it
SAFETY
Follow all area / machine center specific safety regulations
Wear all required personal protective equipment : hardhat, hearing protection, etc
Do not enter restricted areas
Immediately remedy unsafe conditions, investigate, take appropriate actions / next steps and report to Human Resources / Safety Manager
Request assistance when a task exceeds individual knowledge
Visually inspect equipment and area before starting / operating
Whenever possible, eliminate unsafe conditions as soon as possible
Use Standard Lockout Procedures when appropriate for machine centers
Use proper lifting technique by pushing, pulling and lifting with your legs and not your back
Never approach a saw while it is still running
Follow all other safety regulations as set forth by the company
