Job description
The Lead Diesel Mechanic, or Diesel Service Technician, inspects, diagnoses and repairs diesel-powered vehicles and machines, like trucks, forklifts and trailers. Their main duties include running diagnostic tests on vehicles, replacing the vehicles’ engine, transmission, steering mechanism or braking system and test driving the vehicle to determine if they properly fixed the maintenance issue
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Consults the team and reading work orders to evaluate the tasks required
- Prepares work plans after fully scoping out the issues
- Runs diagnostic tests on diesel engines and interpreting the results to offer suitable solutions
- Inspects vehicle systems, including suspensions, steering and exhausts
- Repairs or replaces vehicle transmissions, brakes, engines and other associated parts
- Conducts field visits in the case of an emergency or sudden breakdown
- Test drives repaired vehicles to gauge their performance
- Completes oil changes, wheel balancing, alignment and brake checks
- Maintains records of parts inventory and serviced vehicles and prepares reports documenting work performed
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections and service on machines and identifies the causes of unexpected breakdowns of machines.
- Thoroughly cleans machines and machine parts, removing parts and reinstalling as necessary.
- Oils and lubricates moving parts on machines to ensure effective performance.
- Orders and installs replacement parts for machines.
- Repairs broken machines quickly and efficiently.
- Cleans, organizes, inventories, stocks, and otherwise maintains shop areas, parts, tools, and supplies.
- Collaborates with the production manager regarding new products being added and modifications that will be required.
- Makes necessary modifications and implements tests runs; confers with the production manager regarding test results and makes additional alterations to machinery as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION
- Advanced knowledge of a vehicle, its electrical system and the mechanisms of a diesel engine
- In-depth knowledge of diesel engine components and operational mechanisms
- Superior knowledge of maintenance tools and repair equipment
- Comfortable using mechanical and electrical power tools
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Keen attention to detail
- Basic knowledge of computer systems and other relevant electronics
- Proficiency in the use of diesel engine diagnostic software
- A valid driver’s license
- Good interpersonal skills
- Effective collaboration and communication skills
EDUCATION
- Some vocational or community college with related coursework or equivalent experience, required.
- Diesel engine experience preferred

Expected hours: 40 per week
