POSITION: Certified Teacher

JOB GOAL:

The job of Certified High School Teacher was established for the purpose/s of developing students' academic skills through courses of study and implementing approved curriculum; addressing specific educational needs of students; providing feedback regarding student progress, expectations, goals, and activities.

The teacher serves as the instruction leader of the students. The teacher displays an interest in the welfare of the students and the school’s educational program; exercises a high degree of imagination, ingenuity and creativity; exhibits professionalism and develops a high degree of self-direction; has excellent communication skills; and displays a sense of humor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The teacher must have:

  • Valid South Carolina teaching certificate for the position to which the individual is assigned;
  • Highly qualified in the core content for the position to which the individual is assigned;
  • Clean background check.

REPORTS TO: Principal

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Administers subject specific assessment and test for the purpose of assessing the level of students' competencies;
  • Creates and designs lesson plans, instruction, and assessment aligned to South Carolina Academic Standards;
  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress, in a timely manner, for the purpose of supporting teacher's expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment;
  • Assesses students' (e.g. progress, expectations, goals, etc.) for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration;
  • Collaborates with a variety of parties (e.g. instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions;
  • Achieving established program objectives and/or and planning curriculum;
  • Presents accurate information in lessons;
  • Uses content material appropriate to students, content area, and academic standards;
  • Uses resource materials, procedures, and models related to the lesson;
  • Follows a logical sequence of instruction;
  • Plans instruction and activities which address identified objective;
  • Relates and or integrates materials to other disciplines;
  • Organize resources to facilitate the achievement of objective;
  • Provides focus for the students at the beginning of lessons;
  • Obtains responses, assesses learning, and adjusts instruction in order to provide students the best opportunity for academic success;
  • Provides opportunities for students to practice concept skills;
  • Utilizes a variety of techniques and methods to provide instruction at higher levels of thinking;
  • Communicates expectations for appropriate classroom behavior;
  • Ensures that students are supervised at all times;
  • Keeps accurate grade and attendance records;
  • Counsels students for the purpose of improving performance, health status, problem solving techniques and a variety of personal issues;
  • Deals with students in a fair and impartial manner, promoting positive self-image/concept;
  • Models, requires, and promotes a feeling of mutual respect and courtesy;
  • Creates an atmosphere conducive to verbal and or nonverbal activity;
  • Provides constructive feedback/criticism to students;
  • Directs assistant teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students;
  • Evaluates students' performance within subject area for the purpose of determining student progress and/or developing remediation plans;
  • Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academics through a defined course of study;
  • Maintains the classroom (e.g. cleaning, organizing, removing hazards, etc.) for the purpose of providing an environment conductive to learning;
  • Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and an optimal learning environment;
  • Monitors student activities (e.g. classroom, lunch, grounds, sporting events, dances, etc.) for the purpose of providing for the safety and welfare of students;
  • Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, campus, field trips, sporting events, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment;
  • Participates in a variety of meetings, trainings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions;
  • Prepares teaching materials and a variety of manual and electronic documents, files and records (e.g. lesson plans, substitute plans, grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and documenting student progress;
  • Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Discipline Code, administrative and/or school policies;
  • Researches a variety of topics and/or teaching styles for the purpose of obtaining knowledge and/or information to utilize in the classroom setting;
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution;
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. students, other teachers, parents, administrators, etc.) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and/or direction;
  • Supports other teachers for the purpose of providing assistance, guidance, and/or aid to colleagues.
  • Models professionalism through speech, dress, and actions;
  • Adheres to South Carolina Department of Education and Greg Mathis Charter High School policies, rules, and regulations;

  • Participates in professional organizations whose purpose is to improve administrative skills.
  • Participates in district-wide committees
  • Participates in decision making, planning and evaluation at the district level.

Other/additional duties as assigned by the Principal.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 190 Days
