The Griffin Museum of Science Industry Chicago (Griffin MSI)—one of the largest science museums in the world—is home to more than 400,000 square feet of hands-on exhibits designed to spark scientific inquiry and creativity. Opened during 1933's Century of Progress in a building from 1893's Columbian Exposition, Griffin MSI is the place where generations have been coming to see what's next. Griffin MSI's is the only building constructed for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition's "White City" that remains at the site. Built as the fair's Palace of Fine Arts, it is now home to the Western Hemisphere's largest science museum. For 90 years, Griffin MSI has brought science into the daily lives of millions through generational touchpoints and a beloved, nostalgic experience.
Griffin MSI is moving forward on an ambitious plan to reimagine the museum and its future. The Chief Development Officer will play a critical role in shaping the strategies underpinning the museum's strategic pillars : Griffin MSI Is My Museum, Science In Our Daily Lives, Meaningful Relationships, and Sustainable Strength. This strategy depends on meeting the moment of changing guest expectations, emerging stories of industrial innovation, and redefining meaningful relationships to their community.
Griffin MSI will reimagine their campus, opening their north façade and dedicating more space to education and exhibits to address today's innovation themes with staying power. Griffin MSI will transform its educational efforts, forming meaningful relationships through neighborhood-led programming and building a revenue model to support sustainable strength. Griffin MSI will modernize their experience, using the building in new ways and ensuring each visitor – no matter their familiarity with Griffin MSI – sees Griffin MSI as their museum. Griffin MSI will pursue these with a commitment to financial, operational, and organizational sustainability that positions it well for its next 100 years.
The Chief Development Officer is responsible for strategizing, planning, coordinating, and implementing a broad-based, multi-constituency development program, including capital campaigns and major gift initiatives, annual giving including membership, and restricted special initiatives.
Griffin MSI seeks a development executive with proven management and leadership experience in a similar position in a museum, science center, or related non-profit organization. This individual's background and experience would include proven expertise and a record of achievement in development and fundraising practices including major, principal, and planned gift development. This person will have a demonstrated track record in a leadership role in the conceptualization, planning, and realization of large-scale capital campaigns. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of closing significant gifts of six figures and above. Participation at a leadership level in capital campaign ($20 million or greater) from concept to completion is highly desired.
The Chief Development Officer is a vital member of the staff leadership team who will work closely with an active volunteer Board of Directors. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to understand and operate effectively within a 501c3 nonprofit governing environment while providing strong leadership in the implementation of best practice management techniques in development / fundraising. Knowledge of science centers and museums is preferred but not required; the ability and capacity to understand the patron experience of individuals and members of cultural institutions is essential.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university is required. A proven record of successful fundraising and demonstrated experience in securing major contributions is required.
The salary range for this position annually is between $285,000 - $335,000 plus an incentive discretionary bonus potential.
