Job Description

The Medical Technician (Phlebotomist) will be responsible for performing phlebotomy procedures and laboratory sample processing at the VA Maine Healthcare System. This role requires a high degree of technical proficiency, attention to detail, and commitment to patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform patient phlebotomy, including inpatient rounds, outpatient collections, Emergency Department (ED) draws, STAT, ASAP, and timed draws.
• Process samples and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis and external send-outs.
• Ensure patient safety and confidentiality in handling electronic and paper records.
• Conduct independent testing, evaluate results, document findings, and report patient testing and Quality Control (QC) measures.
• Identify, document, and resolve any issues related to specimen collection, processing, testing, or reporting.
• Deliver professional, patient-centered service to maintain high standards of care and minimize complaints from stakeholders.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of recent phlebotomy experience.
• Technical Proficiency: Must demonstrate the necessary technical skills and fluency in English (reading, writing, speaking, and understanding).
• Certification & Competency: Must provide documentation upon request to verify current certifications, skills, and licensure as required for the role.

Work Schedule

Phlebotomists will be scheduled for day and evening shifts, with limited weekend and holiday coverage. Night shifts are not required.

Day Shift Hours:

• 5:30 AM – 2:00 PM
• 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
• 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM
• 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
• 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
• 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
• 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
• 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM
• 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM
• 10:00 AM – 6:30 PM
• 10:00 AM – 8:30 PM

Evening Shift Hours:

• 12:00 PM – 8:30 PM
• 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM
• 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM

Note: Employees may be required to work overtime, but on-call or standby duties are not required. Personnel must be present during scheduled shifts at their assigned VA Medical Center location.
