Art Teacher

The Guadalupe Centers Charter Schools serves 1600 students from PreK-12 and is a free, open-enrollment public charter school. Over 92% of our students are Latinx. Our school system consists of Guadalupe Centers High School, Guadalupe Centers Middle School, and Guadalupe Centers Elementary School. Our system grew out of Guadalupe Centers' educational programming. Guadalupe Centers is the longest continuously operating agency serving the Latinx community in the US since 1919. Our roots in our community run deep.

Summary :

To assist with creating a quality program and a class environment conducive to developing in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques of artistic expression consistent with school guidelines; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of art; to establish good relationships with students, parents, and other staff members.

Reports to : Building Principal

Duties / Responsibilities :

  • Teach knowledge and skills in art, including drawing, painting, ceramics, and art history.
  • Provide instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciation and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.
  • Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and ceramics.
  • Understand the versatility of acrylic paints : dry brushing, staining, layering, underpainting, and mono-printing.
  • Know and able to apply elements of design and modern principles of art.
  • Know the fundamentals and different approaches to drawing and media techniques.
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
  • Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
  • Organize storage areas, control the use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and minimize the time required for distribution and collection.
  • Evaluate each student's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understanding, and prepare progress reports.
  • Select and requisition books, instructional materials, tools, and instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records.
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students' work for the school and community; may also sponsor exhibits from outside the school.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school and / or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs, such as after-school art clubs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations.
  • Committed to working with under-served students.
  • Education and Experience :

  • Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education.
  • Missouri State Certification in Secondary Education.
  • Bilingual ability, English required and Spanish preferred.
  • Experience in an urban school setting is preferred.
  • Highly Qualified Status (this status requires the following) ...

  • Appropriate certification for the course / grade level being taught.
  • Documentation of content expertise in the area being taught.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking throughout the school and classroom.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school and other facilities as needed.
