Since 1972, Guide Dogs of the Desert (GDD) has made a difference in the lives of individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Over the past 50 years, more than 1400 client/dog teams from around the country have graduated from Guide Dogs of the Desert, enjoying richer, fuller and more productive lives. Attending a 28-day in-residence training program on campus, the blind individual is matched with the highest quality dog that is custom-trained to the individual’s personal needs and home environment – at no cost to the client.
Guide Dogs of the Desert is a service provider to the visually impaired supported by over 200 volunteers who raise puppies for training to be service animals for those in need. All dogs are AKC-registered pedigreed animals who are taught obedience and socialization before their intense specialty training as service animals begins.
Guide Dogs is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, totally reliant upon private sector funding.
This is a temporary position.
POSITION OVERVIEW
This position begins work at 7:00pm each day and ends the next morning at 8:00am, five (5) days a week, while classes are in session, which includes weekends, and the weekends can vary. There is a separate student residence room with its own bathroom facilities set aside for this position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Stays the night with the students in training (3- 6 individuals) 5 nights a week (weekdays can vary and can include weekends)
Available to assist students in tasks requiring visual assistance, support in cleaning messes, and contacting emergency services as needed.
Communicates daily any needs/problems with Class Instructors and Manager of Admissions & Student Services.
Keeps the common areas clean, picked up, and trash recycling emptied daily.
General light housekeeping, sweeping, and mopping of floors as needed.
Serves food on an “as needed” basis (continental breakfasts, snacks, etc.)
Ensures students are awake and relieving dogs each morning at 6:15am. Initially will help students develop their clean-up technique, in preparation for students to be ultimately becoming responsible for all the dog’s needs and care.
Maintains a positive, upbeat role in the organization.
Promotes and exemplifies GDD’s values, represents departmental objectives and interests to internal and external customers, and is accountable for responsibilities and own actions.
Responds to internal/external customer’s needs in a timely and efficient manner.

- Education and/or experience
- Minimum-High School Diploma.
- Customer service and dog experience preferred.

Required Technical / Certification / Licenses
- Valid CA Driver’s license
- First Aid Certification desirable
