ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This position works within the Guilford County Soil and Water Conservation District and offers a variety of K-12 environmental education programs for students and teachers, including in-school, after school, library and summer programs. All programs utilize STEM and inquiry-based methods, and are correlated to NC core standards where applicable. Custom environmental and natural resource education programs for students and adults are available upon request and all programs are provided free of charge.
 
In addition, this position provides office support for the Division of Soil and Water and for the Soil and Water Conservation Board Supervisors, and acts as Secretary for the Soil & Water Conservation Board.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Plans and implements educational programs in the communities and in the elementary, middle and high schools on conserving water and other natural resources of Guilford County.
 
DISTINGUISHING FEASTURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class assists the Soil and Water Conservation staff in writing, monitoring and maintaining grants; and provides staff and office support for the five Board of Supervisors of the Soil and Water Conservation District Board including acting as recording secretary for Board meetings.   The position also plans and implements educational programs in the communities and in the elementary, middle and high schools on conserving soil, water and other natural resources of Guilford County.  Work is performed under the general supervision of and reports to the Soil & Water Conservation Manager and reviewed through conferences, reports, observation of program activities completed, and feedback from groups receiving the services.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties and Tasks
  • Provides office support for the Soil and Water Conservation District Staff and the Board Supervisors (5 members), and acts as Secretary for the Soil & Water Conservation Board.
  • Works in conjunction with the  Soil & Water Conservation Manager in planning and implementing education components of agency programs.
  • Visits schools, community organizations, professional groups, and private organizations to share information and advice on particular programs and conservation activities.
  • Plans, develops, and conducts workshops, sessions, and training opportunities for school and diverse public groups.
  • Complete grant applications, monitor and maintain grant files on behalf of Soil & Water Conservation.
  • Performs related work assignments as required.
 
RECURUITMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of conservation principles and practices relating to soil and water conservation.  
  • Ability to design a variety of materials to promote conservation and develop grants.
  • Ability to be innovative and creative in developing conservation training methods.
  • Ability to write and speak effectively and to stimulate interest and cooperation among groups.
  • Ability to take concise minutes at board meetings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with various individuals and groups in the course of work.
  • Ability to use basic computer software including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Publisher.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a BS degree in Environmental Science or a related field of study, OR an Associate Degree in Environmental Science, in a related field of study and two years of  work experience in a related field.  Preferred: Experience in conservation and/or educational programs and grant writing.

Special Qualification:
Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver License or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.


An assessment will be completed for this position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.  Must have visual acuity to perform tasks requiring color, depth perception and field of vision sufficient to perform tasks associated with the preparation and analysis of figures and data, frequent operation of a computer, and accounting, reviewing and understanding documents. Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally or and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and other sedentary criteria are met.

Environmental Conditions
Work is performed primarily in a normal office, classroom and auditorium environment.  Work also may be outside for extended periods, for workshops, field days or other activities.  The employee may occasionally be exposed to outside temperatures lower than 32 degrees and/or higher than 100 degrees.
