Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The Department of Recreation and Wellness is a broad program located in the Division of Student Affairs, which includes organized and informal sports, fitness, outdoor adventure, and experiential education programming. Our mission is to foster comprehensive wellness by engaging students and the UNCG community in experiential and educational opportunities. We promote lifelong success through meaningful and inclusive programs and resources.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation & Education, the Programming Coordinator will serve as a leader within the department's outdoor recreation and education team - Outdoor Adventures. Outdoor Adventures is responsible for oversight of the indoor climbing and bouldering walls; equipment rental center; adventure trips and workshops; team development programs; and Piney Lake informal recreation and events. The Outdoor Adventures team consists of one full-time Assistant Director, two full-time Coordinators, and two part-time Graduate Assistants. This coordinator position is responsible for developing high-impact outdoor recreation experiences for the UNCG community. This position directly supervises 30 student employees.
In addition, the Outdoor Adventures team is responsible for developing and implementing a shared vision guided by departmental goals that are aligned with the Division of Student Affairs' strategic plan. Outdoor Adventures plays a key role with leveraging specific strategies around health and wellbeing as well as student learning and success. Outdoor recreation and education programming are critical to RecWell's ability to further promote social, physical, environmental, and career dimensions of well-being for the UNCG community. This position is uniquely positioned to contribute to student learning and student success by providing space for UNCG students to build community through welcoming and inclusive outdoor recreation opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Minimum of one year of full-time work experience in the outdoor recreation field; two years of a Graduate Assistantship counts as one year of experience.
- Previous supervisory experience (part-time and / or student employees).
- Direct experience with risk management of outdoor recreation programs.
- Demonstrated experience designing and leading single and multi-day adventure trips in several of the following outdoor recreation activities : rock climbing, caving, backpacking, hiking, sea kayaking, flatwater kayaking, whitewater kayaking, whitewater rafting, stand-up-paddle boarding, surfing, biking, and skiing / snowboarding.
- Current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR / AED for Professional Rescuers certification (or ability to obtain within first 30-days of employment).
- Current Wilderness First Responder Certification.
- Valid driver's license.
