GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The purpose of this position is to oversee breastfeeding promotion and support activities within the Guilford County Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and community.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The WIC Lactation Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and evaluation of breastfeeding activities of the local agency. The role ensures that local agency staff are properly trained on breastfeeding education and support and collaborates with community breastfeeding stakeholders. An individual in this role is current on breastfeeding program management policies, procedures, and resources; disseminates necessary information to local agency staff and monitors agency’s compliance. The WIC Lactation Program Coordinator serves as one of the agency’s designated breastfeeding experts, providing breastfeeding support to WIC participants experiencing complex maternal and /or infant breastfeeding issues This position manages the PH Infant Care Counselors and WIC Lactation Consultant and reports to the Nutrition Program Director.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Individual is responsible for the planning, management, implementation, and evaluation of the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program including training and supervising Infant Care Counselors
- Functions as the Breastfeeding Coordinator by managing breastfeeding promotion and support activities within the local agency and community
- Serves as agency’s Designated Breastfeeding Expert (DBE) providing breastfeeding expertise and care for WIC participants experiencing problems outside the scope of practice of the Infant Care Counselor or Competent Professional Authority (CPA)
- Assist the WIC Director with planning, coordinating, and evaluating the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
- Collaborate with other WIC supervisors to manage clinic operations

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in related field, Registered Dietitian, Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant, or Dietetic Technician Registered. International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant certification (IBCLC) or exam eligible, and two (2) years of relevant experience including a minimum of one year of counseling breastfeeding dyads.Preferred Qualifications
Experience in program managementAt least one year of supervisory experience
At least two years of experience counseling & developing care plans for breastfeeding dyads
Experience in WIC, similar federal nutrition programs, and/or maternal and child nutrition programs
Administering the Class
Administering the Class - Candidates should provide documentation of certification status from the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and university or college transcripts.
May Require Driving
This position may require driving for this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business such as but not limited to attending conferences, meetings, or any other county related functions. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver’s license and that the driving record is compatible with the county’s driving criteria.
If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County’s vehicle use policy.
