The Greater Vallejo Recreation District is a Special Service District that has been serving area residents for over sixty years. As a Special Service District, GVRD operates as a separate government agency from the City of Vallejo. GVRD manages 407 acres of public park space including 20 neighborhood parks, 10 community parks, 6 special purpose parks, and Olympic-size swimming pool and 4 community centers.  GVRD maintains over 1,000 acres of public land. 


GVRD is governed by a five-member Board of Directors. With 30 plus full time and approximately 155 part-time and seasonal employees, GVRD operates on a 2024-2025 fiscal year budget of $12.9 million for general fund operations and Measure K funding amounting to $2.2 million.  The Measure K funding is being utilized to purchase necessary equipment, improve parks, facilities.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class.  Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

 

DEFINITION

Under general supervisor, provide a safe and enjoyable experience for participants in the following recreational programs areas: sports, aquatics, youth services and camps, teens, special events, Children’s Wonderland, and therapeutic recreation; lead and oversee staff responsible for supervising participants; and perform a variety of tasks in support of assigned function.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Coordinator or Assistant Coordinator.

 

Exercises functional and technical supervision over Recreation Leaders.

 

ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS-Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

 

Essential Functions:

  1. Lead and oversee the staff and volunteers responsible for overseeing participants in the recreation programs.
  2. Implement and lead various recreational activities, including crafts, games, sports, and field trips; prepare a weekly schedule for assigned site.
  3. Collect fees and issue receipts; update enrollment and payments in the recreation software system; follow up on payment discrepancies and missed payments with program participants.
  4. For ongoing programs, update registration forms of enrolled participants as needed, and post in the recreation software system.
  5. Take attendance daily from class list provided through recreation software system.
  6. Lead recreational activities; supervise participants and ensure safety rules and guidelines are followed; report unsafe conditions to supervisory personnel.
  7. Resolve conflicts among participants.
  8. Provide information to the public on program activities.
  9. Respond to parent, school or community concerns and issues using appropriate communication skills, direct to higher level staff as necessary.
  10. May provide schedule of staff for assigned sites.
  11. Perform first aid as necessary.
  12. Update inventory of equipment and supplies at program as well as purchase with program funds.

 

Marginal Functions:

  1. Assist in the general cleaning and upkeep of facilities.
  2. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  3. Train new Recreation Leaders assigned to site.


QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  1. General recreation principles and practices.
  2. Rules and regulations of age-appropriate recreation activities.
  3. Basic art and craft techniques, games, and sports.
  4. Procedures of record keeping
  5. Basic mathematical principles.
  6. English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Ability to:

  1. Oversee the work of Recreation Leaders and volunteers.
  2. Maintain accurate records.
  3. Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  4. Be a positive role model and interact appropriately with participants.
  5. Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
  6. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  7. Use recreation software system.
  8. Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  9. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  10. Attend meetings and in service trainings related to work.

 

Experience and Education Guidelines:  Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:


Experience:

Two years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation programs or a childcare setting.

 

Education:

Completion of High School or equivalent; college coursework is preferred.

 

License or Certificate

Possession of a valid California Driver License.

 

C.P.R. and First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain within six months of hire date.

 

For ExLP programs, must pass the para-educator test within three (3) months of hire date.

 

Special Requirement:

May be required to pass TB test depending on assignment.

 

Minimum age (dependent on program):

Teen/Therapeutic Programs:         21 years old

All others:                                       18 years old

 

Working Conditions:


Environmental Conditions:

Indoor and outdoor facilities; exposure to noise, dust, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions; working with young children, teenagers, and clients with special needs.

 

Physical Demands:

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for occasional moderate or light lifting; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; walking for prolonged periods of time; standing for prolonged periods of time.
