The Role

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

• The candidate will use their background and experience to work directly with the Navy and NNS Submarine Program Offices as well as NAVSEA technical codes and Navy labs to request / review / implement technical requirement changes with a focus on improving cost, schedule, producibility, and Ao.
• The position holder should be able to influence outside organizations including NAVSEA, NSWCCD, NUWC, SOS, ONR, and EB / ELO that have a direct impact or drive technical future submarine requirements

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience; Master's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

The candidate will have broad based expert technical knowledge of submarine design / specifications and construction practices and be able to apply advanced technical principles, theories and concepts for developing innovative and cost effective technical solutions to meet defined new submarine objectives and deliverables.

Possess superior written and verbal communication skills as well as be able to serve as a mentor to supervisors / engineers to develop their knowledge, technical skills and expertise.

The candidate will utilize their technical expertise and knowledge to develop cost effective solutions to meet or beat program goals and objectives.

Develop high quality solutions using ingenuity and creativity to advance future submarine concepts.
