SUMMARY
The Assistant Superintendent position will involve directing aspects of construction projects assigned by the General Superintendent, Project Superintendent or Project Manager. Responsibilities include working with the project team to ensure successful completion of projects, adhering to Russell’s standards of quality, and helping to deliver projects on time and within budget.
WHY THIS JOB IS IMPORTANT
The Asst. Superintendent fulfills the critical role of the timely procurement, review, approval and ultimately delivery to the project site of all building components including labor, materials, equipment and subcontractors so that the Superintendent can efficiently and safely prosecute timely, profitable and quality work. The Asst. Superintendent is responsible for all such project components and resources to adhere in strict compliance to the project specifications and the project schedule established by the PM and Superintendent at project commencement.
The Asst. Superintendent is wholly responsible for all the duties of this position which may be performed on their own or with a staff of subordinates, depending on the size and complexity of the project.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
You will report to the General Superintendent, Project Superintendent, or Project Manager who will assign all duties and responsibilities. Commonly assigned duties and responsibilities include:
- You will direct the foreman, field engineers, and project coordinators as required for the project.
- You will serve as a liaison with the Owner and Architect representatives, when appropriate, including obtaining information regarding changes and clarification of drawings.
- You will be responsible for coordinating working drawings and shop drawings, including receiving and distributing drawings, specifications, and other contract documents in coordination with the project management staff.
- You will assist with field purchasing for the project and help expedite and coordinate the delivery of required materials.
- You will assist in the preparation, monitoring, and updating of the project schedule.
- You will coordinate work in place quantities and labor cost coding.
- You will assist with the completion of project close-out activities, including completing items from corrective action lists and punch lists.
- You will perform your work in a safe manner and actively encourage others to comply with safety rules and regulations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building Construction, or Business Management
- 3-4 years of related experience and/or training; Experience may be substituted for a degree on a year-for-year basis
Language Skills
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents
- Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints
- Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style
- Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on controversial or complex topics to client top management, H.J. Russell corporate senior management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
Reasoning Ability
- Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
- Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.) in its most difficult phases
