CURRENT OPENING : There are currently multiple part-time openings (10 months, 20 to 32.5 hours per week). Salary placement will be on Range 10 of the CSEA Salary Schedule "B." Initial salary placement for new employees is customarily at step 1 ($18.34 per hour) of this salary range.

APPLICANT FILING INFORMATION : The recruitment is open to the public. An eligibility list will be established to fill vacancies for full time, part time, evening, summer, and substitute positions throughout the duration of the eligibility list. Eligibility lists typically last for six months. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks. Pursuant to PC Rule 6.2.10, the eligibility list established for this recruitment may be used for another related classification at the same or lower salary.

NOTE : Answers to the supplemental questions, a copy of your High School diploma or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency, and transcripts verifying at least 12 units of college coursework (see minimum qualifications) must be submitted with your application. If you have previously held a Child Development permit, a copy of your permit must be submitted with your application. Essential Duties

THE POSITION

Assists a teacher in a Child Development Center in conducting instructional activities, providing services to children newborn to fifth grade.

Minimum Qualifications

Education :

Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency, and completion of a minimum of 12 semester units of course work in early childhood education or child development (excluding field work), including at least one course of at least three semester units in each of the following core areas :

  • Child / human growth and development
  • Child, family, and community, or child and family relations

    Programs / curriculum

    Experience :

    Six months paid or unpaid experience working with and / or caring for children from newborn to fifth grade.

    Special :

  • Incumbents must apply for an Associate Teacher Permit through the Commission on Teacher Credentialing within the first six months of employment.
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination. Absence of back problems or any other physical impairments that might preclude the performance of physical labor or lifting must be evident.

    Some positions in this classification require the ability to speak, read, and write a second language in addition to English.

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION : Incumbents must apply for and obtain an Associate Teacher Permit through the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. In addition, incumbents must complete 15 additional units of coursework in early childhood education or child development and obtain the renewal of the required Associate Teacher Permit. Upon completion of the renewal, incumbents are required to maintain the Associate Teacher Permit. Fees related to obtaining and renewing the Associate Teacher Permit are at the employee's expense.

    In order to obtain the renewal of Associate Teacher Permit, incumbents have to be enrolled in an accredited institution leading to an Associate Degree or higher in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or related field. By the end of the ten year period, the incumbent must meet the requirements for the Child Development Teacher Permit. Requirements mandated by U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Office of Head Start.

    Ideal candidates will have

    Knowledge of :

  • Personal hygiene.
  • Symptoms of common childhood illnesses such as colds, flu, diarrhea, chicken pox.

    Basic food preparation.

    Simple record keeping.

    Basic housekeeping methods.

    Developmentally appropriate practices with children.

    Objective observations of children.

    Ability to :

  • Communicate orally and in writing for the purpose of providing and obtaining information.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

    Determine needs of newborn to fifth-grade children.

    Perform physical labor, including lifting children to facilitate health or mobility needs.

    Organize and develop educational and recreational activities.

    Perform simple routine clerical duties.

    Attend first aid and CPR annual training.

    Operate simple office machines.

  • COVID Vaccine Requirement

    Per Board policy, employees are allowed on District campuses or facilities only if they are fully vaccinated. This resolution applies to all applicants upon hire. Applicants are required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination status to the Personnel Commission Office on the date of the examination. Applicants will not be allowed to take the examination without being fully vaccinated. People are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after completion of a vaccine.

    General Information

    The screening process for this position, which may be subject to modification, will include some form of an application screening, initial screening of qualifications, documentation / certification screening, and in some instances supplemental application screening. The stated qualifications for the position represent only the minimum requirements and do not guarantee qualification for examination or placement on an eligibility list.

    The examination may consist of any combination of the following : training and experience evaluation, written knowledge test, hands on / performance test, structured panel interview, situational judgement interview, or other type of exam of fitness for duty. All parts of the examination process are job related. A passing score must be attained on each portion of the exam to advance to the next stage and ultimate placement on the eligibility list, which depending on the classification, may be in force for six months or one year.

    Paid Holidays

    Up to 16 holidays per year depending on months worked for all classified employees.

    Paid Vacation

    Vacation is prorated for all classified employees, based on the hours and months worked per year. Below is the vacation schedule for classified supervisors and classified staff.

    Classified Employee Vacation Chart

    1-5 years of service

  • One day of vacation will be earned per month worked.
  • 6-10 years of service

  • One and one-quarter (1 ¼) days of vacation will be earned per month worked.
  • 11-15 years of service

  • One and one-half (1 ½) days of vacation will be earned per month worked.
  • 16-20 years of service

  • One and three-fourths (1 ¾) days of vacation will be earned per month worked.
  • 21 years of service

  • Two (2) days of vacation will be earned per month worked.
  • Health Benefits

    For positions 35 hours or more per week the District contributes $12,900 (subject to change) toward annual premium for medical, dental, vision and life insurance coverage. Partially paid benefits are available for part-time (20-34) hour employees. The District participates in the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Lifetime retirement benefits provided for eligible retirees.

    District Benefit Providers :

    The following benefit providers are available for enrollment for eligible employees.

  • Medical : Kaiser, United Health Care PPO / HMO
  • Dental : Delta Dental (PPO) or DeltaCare USA (HMO)
  • Vision : Vision Service Plan (VSP)
  • Out of pocket costs are dependent on which provider is selected. Each provider has a different annual premium.

    Paid Sick Leave

    Every regular classified employee, probationary or permanent, can earn paid sick leave credit(s) based on one day for each month in which such employees are in a paid status with the District. Earned, but unused sick leave can accumulate without limit. Full-time classified employees (those who work 8 hours per day, 5 days per week and 12 months per year) will normally earn twelve (12) days of sick leave credit(s) during each fiscal year.
