"I am confident Hack Club will change the world."
– Tom Preston-Werner, Founder of GitHub.com

Hack Club (hackclub.org) is hiring the next member of the HCB (hack.club/hcb) team!

We're a fast-moving, nonprofit startup based in Shelburne, helping over 40,000 teenagers—from across the U.S. and around the world—learn to code, forge incredible friendships, and gain leadership skills.

Founded in 2014 by a 16-year-old high school dropout, Hack Club has grown into a worldwide by the students, for the students education movement. (Read more about us in the Wall Street Journal's profile at hack.club/wsj and watch our a recent talk from our founder at hack.club/ubuntu)

About HCB

Through HCB, we empower high school students to launch their own nonprofits.

Every month, 1,400 teenagers use HCB to raise, manage, and spend charitable funds for hackathons, robotics teams, coding clubs, open source coding projects, and more.

Our impact extends to some of the largest fire relief efforts in Los Angeles—using HCB to manage all their finances!

In 2024, teenagers raised $1.8 million through HCB, and our goal is to grow that significantly.

Your Role

As a member of HCB's team of five, you'll work directly with high school students (ages 13–18) and lead them in launching nonprofits. Your responsibilities include:

  • Application Management:
  • Respond to applications from teenagers eager to use HCB.
  • Review applications to ensure they meet our charitable guidelines.
  • Set up onboarding calls via Zoom to walk them through our platform.
  • Day-to-Day Support:
  • Act as the primary point of contact for teenagers via Slack, email, and other communication channels.
  • Partner Engagement (Occasional):
  • Collaborate with larger partners running grant programs directly for teenagers (ex. we recently facilitated a $1m grant program to robotics teams).
  • Facilitate the flow of funds by drafting onboarding documents, creating training materials, hosting calls, and, from time to time, traveling to conferences (recently, we even joined partners at a robotics event in Texas!).
  • Product and Community Advocacy:
  • Work with a small group of teammates to shape the future direction of HCB.
  • Engage with teenage users to understand their pain points, brainstorm features, and push the platform to reach our goal of 25,000 monthly users by the end of 2025.

Compensation: Full-time, $45,000–55,000/year (equivalent to $22-26/hr)

Benefits, Location & Hours

  • Paid Time Off: 4 weeks PTO plus 11 additional paid holidays.
  • Health Insurance: Vermont Preferred Gold plan from BlueCross BlueShield of Vermont.
  • Hardware Stipend: $2,000 to set up your ideal workstation (e.g., MacBook Air, big monitor, external keyboard, and mouse).
  • Office: Work from a beautifully restored 1800s building in Shelburne, Vermont.
  • Membership: Receive a paid membership at Generator Makerspace (https://generatorvt.com/).

What We’re Looking For

To succeed in this role, you should be:

  • Relationship-Builder: Skilled at connecting with teenagers, earning their trust, and inspiring confidence as they embark on their first financial experiences.
  • Highly Reliable: Able to manage your responsibilities independently and respond promptly to communications.
  • Tech-Savvy: Comfortable navigating online communities and digital platforms (we don't expect you to know to code).
  • Community-Oriented: Passion for or experience in online or community-driven spaces (like gaming, fan fiction, etc.) is a plus.

How to Apply

Please email Melanie Smith, director of operations for HCB and direct manager for this role, at melanie@hackclub.com with your resume and why you'd be a great fit for this role. Include the word "moneybucks" in the subject line. Do not apply via really.

Quotes from High Schoolers in Hack Club

"HCB gave me the tools, the platform, the support, and the confidence to put on a record-breaking hackathon for teens in my city. Without HCB, we would be stuck in mountains of paperwork and weighed down by outdated financial systems."

"HCB enabled me and my team to navigate finances very easily without much stress. It made our hackathons and transactions run smoothly without us worrying about financial complexities and systems :)"

"HCB taught me how to finance my hackathons, without it, I wouldn't have been able to organise projects and hackathons, what captures the essence is the people behind it and not the platform, the platform is far from unique, it's the people who built it, maintain it, and support it which is what makes it unique and part of our hearts"

"HCB has allowed me to build my non-profit and coding club. It has made me learn a lot more about finances and financial education, which is something I don't get a lot from school.

HCB has proven that there is a new tier of financial institutions, one that is modern and has great support. One without the hold music. One without the 100 pages terms of service and contracts. One that allows me to expand."

after years of creating in isolation, hack club made me realize that i wasnt alone in my pursuits, and that there were people like me who could teach me things i had never previously known !! its made getting into circuitry and other fields that have been inaccessible to my financially struggling family far easier and simpler, and i wouldnt feel as confident as a creative if it werent for the incredibly helpful community and initiatives =]

A few months ago, I found myself drawn to the world of programming. I had always admired the creativity behind apps, websites, and games, but coding felt like a daunting mountain to climb. That’s when I stumbled upon Hack Club, an organization focused on helping students and young enthusiasts learn to code through collaboration, projects, and community support.

At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Hack Club wasn't just another online course—it was a community of passionate individuals from all over the world, all working on different projects. After joining, I immediately felt the warm sense of belonging. The supportive environment encouraged me to take my first steps into programming.

Hack Club’s resources were a game changer. Instead of being overwhelmed by coding theory, they helped me dive right into building. I participated in one of their workshops, where we learned how to build a simple website. It was a hands-on, real-world experience, and by the end of the day, I had my very first website up and running!

What really set Hack Club apart was the mentorship. Seasoned programmers were always available to help guide beginners like me through difficult concepts. During one project, I wanted to integrate a JavaScript animation into my site, but I couldn’t quite figure it out. I reached out for help in the community Slack channel, and within minutes, a mentor walked me through the code, line by line, until I understood how it all worked.

Another amazing part of Hack Club was the chance to collaborate with others. I joined a group project where we built a small game, and through that, I not only honed my coding skills but also learned how to work in a team environment—something I never expected to learn in a coding club!

Through Hack Club’s combination of resources, mentorship, and collaboration, I grew from someone intimidated by code to someone who can build functional projects. It wasn’t just about learning syntax; it was about building confidence and finding joy in creating.

Now, with every new skill I pick up, I feel empowered. And it all started with Hack Club, where they taught me that learning to code isn’t about being perfect—it’s about experimenting, failing, trying again, and having a community that has your back the entire way.

Hi, my name is Caleb! I heard about Hack Club from a friend and thought, "wow, this is actually amazing". I hadn't ever heard of something like this before, but I quickly jumped in on the fun! Instantly, I was amazed by the great community that Hack Club has fostered, so many teenagers working together to make cool stuff! OnBoard was really fun as I had always wanted to make a PCB but never had the money to do it, so OnBoard really helped me improve my PCB design skills. The folks in the electronics channel on Slack helped

me through my journey so much and helped me make sure everything worked after I got it! I am extremely thankful for Hack Club and hope to continue being a part of it!

– Age 16 from Pennsylvania, USA

Through Hack Club, I took my passion for coding to the next level. The excitement of building projects while tracking time using arcade and earning rewards through coding brought me so much joy! It opened my eyes to the tech world and introduced me to amazing friends along the way. Hack Club made learning fun and gave me a community where I truly belong. I hope I can join on some Hackathons in the next 2 Years!

My name is Michelle Lin, and the Hack Foundation’s fiscal sponsorship initiative changed my life.

This summer, my friend Aanya and I founded MedEd Connect—a youth-led organization dedicated to providing accessible education and resources for high school students aspiring to pursue careers in the medical field, with a special emphasis on supporting underfunded communities. We organize monthly Zoom sessions with medical professionals and pre-med students from top universities, and we publish student- written articles on our blog, creating a vibrant network of passionate, like-minded individuals committed to sharing knowledge and experiences.

MedEd was born from a dream of connection, constructed on the principles of collaboration. We recognized the disconnect between a high school student’s dream of pursuing medicine and the reality of becoming a healthcare professional. Thanks to Hack Club, we’ve been able to connect ambitious youth on a global scale; shaping the future of medicine by offering them a free platform to dream big at no extra cost. However, none of this would’ve been possible without Hack Club and the generosity of its incredible donors.

I'd always been a bit of a loner, preferring the company of my computer to that of most people. So when my friend suggested I attend a Hack Club hackathon, I was hesitant. But, as a budding programmer, I couldn't resist the opportunity to challenge myself and maybe learn a thing or two.

The hackathon was a whirlwind of energy and creativity. I was surrounded by other teenagers, their faces lit up with the same kind of passion I felt. It was intimidating at first, but the atmosphere was welcoming and collaborative.

I decided to focus on a project that combined my interest in computer science with my desire to help others. Inspired by a friend who was deaf, I set out to create a website that could translate American Sign Language (ASL) into spoken language. It was a daunting task, but with the help of online tutorials and the support of my new hacker friends, I managed to make significant progress.

As the hackathon drew to a close, I presented my project to a panel of judges. To my dismay, it didn't win anything - but the feeling of accomplishment was indescribable. More importantly, I had met a group of amazing people who shared my love of technology and problem-solving.

One of those people was Alex, a quiet kid with a knack for artificial intelligence. We bonded over our shared interest in creating tools that could make a positive impact on the world. Another was Mahith, who was always ready with a joke or a helpful suggestion. We spent countless hours together, working on projects, playing games, and just hanging out.

Hack Club had completely changed my life. It had given me a sense of belonging, a community of friends who understood me, and the confidence to pursue my passions. The hackathon was more than just a competition; it was a life-changing experience that I will never forget.

I’ve always loved computers. At high school I learnt more but through Hack Club I had an incentive to code at home too. I have enjoyed being part of a growing community of likeminded people.

Thank you Hack Club!

– Age 12 from England, United Kingdom

Back in 2016-2018, being involved with Hack Club provided me with amazing friends and mentors. Some of my fondest high school memories involve meeting Max and Zach in San Francisco and working on Hack Chicago with Megan Cui and Mingjie Jiang.

In the years following it, I've come to appreciate these experiences as something that isn't commonplace. It's very rare to be part of a community in which you're able to work with a wide range of passionate people to achieve monumental feats. It's even rarer to find this opportunity as a high school student. Where else other than Hack Club could you find the people that could assemble 350 students above the civic opera house for the largest high school hackathon in the Midwest?

6 years later, being involved with Hack Club has allowed me to take an unconventional journey through tech. The leadership skills are reflected in my community service work during my 4 years at UIC. The experience building projects from hackclub allowed me to find part-time jobs throughout college. This eventually contributed to landing my current job as a Software Engineer in Finance.

Without my involvement in Hack Club, I'm not sure if I'd be where I am today. I'm sure the younger Sean would figure something out eventually. However, I can say that because of the amazing people at Hack Club, that I've had the opportunity to meet amazing people.

I can't thank Megan, Mingjie, and the team at Hack Club enough. Especially Zach Latta and Max Wofford.

– (Alumni) Age 24 from IL, USA

Through Hack Club I was able to start a school club allowing me to meet a lot of people who also have an interest in technology. This allowed us to build things together as we are working on a replication of Jarvis from iron man using a raspberry pi that Hack Club supplied us through their Arcade program. Hack club has allowed me to find more students like me who have ambitions to make stuff and has given us the resources to allow us.

– Age 15 from Florida, United States

Thru hack club, i managed to get more skills and make friends like zrl

– Age 12 from Delhi, India

Through Hack Club, I have had the opportunity to explore new skills and build innovative projects that I might never have attempted without the generous financial aid and unwavering support from this incredible community. The mentorship, resources, and encouragement I’ve received have not only boosted my confidence but also broadened my perspective on what’s possible. I am incredibly grateful to be a part of this inspiring group of creators and problem-solvers, and I want to sincerely thank everyone who works tirelessly to make this mission a reality. Your efforts are truly making a difference!

– Age 15 from Florida, USA

The opportunity Hack Club has given me in invaluable. Hack Club has given me a chance to make a change in my community and to pioneer toward something I'm truly passionate about. Hack Club has helped me realize my goal and make it attainable.
