This position plans, executes and promotes library services, working with youth of all ages.
Examples of Work Include: Implementing programs, such as storytimes, STEM activities, and family fun nights, for patrons. Conducts reference interviews to assist in finding appropriate materials and information using electronic databases, Internet, as well as traditional print sources, and provides readers advisory service. Plans, prepares, promotes, and delivers programs in the library and in other locations. Assists in collection maintenance including shelving, reading shelves, weeding, repairing materials, and dealing with damaged and missing items. Performs circulation activities including checking materials in and out, placing holds, collecting fines, and issuing library cards. Acts as liaison between community groups and the library system. Communicates regularly with other service providers in the system and shares ideas. Promotes patron interest through creation of displays and bibliographies. Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Subject to work evening and weekend assignments.
Staff Development and OutreachRequirements: Completes twenty hours of continuing education a year, and works a minimum of one outreach event a year.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable ability to understand and use complex electronic catalog, circulation, and patron record computer programs as well as e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and desktop publishing programs. Considerable ability to understand and use reference tools in book form and in online databases. Basic clerical skills including understanding of alphabetical and numerical order with an understanding of and ability to use the Dewey Decimal Classification system. Considerable liking for, understanding of, and ability to work with the public. Considerable ability to communicate with the public either individually or in an audience. Ability to make decisions within stated guidelines and to work independently in a wide variety of situations. Solid commitment to customer service, and the protection of intellectual freedom, and the privacy rights of library users. Ability to lift 10 pounds with occasional lifting of heavier items, up to 25 pounds, and push a cart with up to 100 pounds on it. Ability to bend knees, stretch and lift up to 3 pounds overhead. Ability to sit in an office chair for an extended period of time.
Required Education, Training, Experience: Two years of college or relevant experience is required. Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply. Preference given to candidates with library and/or supervisory experience.
