JOB SUMMARY:

 

Plans, directs, and coordinates the work of Officers at the Correctional Institution on a 12 hour shift engaged in the care and security of inmates, assuring rules and regulations are followed and the facility remains safe and clean for inmates and staff.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Assigns work of Correctional Officers on each shift, assuring all areas of inmate care including receiving, releasing, work details, cleaning, and searching of the facility are carried out in an effective, efficient, and lawful manner.

 

Participates in and coordinates work of Correctional Officers who maintain order and discipline among inmates, distribute meals, medication, mail, clothing, conduct sick call and keep the facility clean and safe for the inmates, employees and the public.

 

Meets with the Shift Supervisor of the previous shift to gather information regarding any particular problems and passes all information along to subordinates. 

 

Oversees the assignment of inmates to work details, and transportation to medical and dental appointments; performs five head counts per day to assure all inmates are accounted for; reports missing inmates immediately.

 

Inspects vehicles to assure all are running properly and arranges to have any repaired if necessary; assures all keys, tools and knives are accounted for.   

 

Reviews all reports submitted by the staff and passes them on to superiors or returns them to officers for additional information.

 

Regular and predictable attendance is required.

 

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

 

Education and Experience:

 

High School Diploma or G.E.D.

 

Four years experience of which at least two years were in a supervisory capacity.

 

Licenses and Certifications:

 

POST Certification. 

 

Valid Class C Driver’s License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of federal and state laws, policies, and procedures governing state correctional facility operations.

 

Knowledge of training and performance evaluation techniques.

 

Knowledge of all safety precautions necessary to maintain a secure atmosphere in a correctional facility.

 

Ability to make decisions under pressure and stressful situations.

 

Ability to supervise and train subordinate personnel.   

 

Ability to observe and remember a number of specific details and incidents to report them to superiors.

 

Ability to prepare concise written reports.

Physical Ability: Essential functions continuously require the ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting/standing); move oneself about the worksite by walking; bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs, twisting at the waist, hips or knees; move oneself by crawling on hands and knees; ascend and descend ladders, stairs, and ramps; reach overhead; position oneself by crouching/kneeling;  maintain body equilibrium to prevent failing when walking, standing, crouching or navigating narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces; push or pull items; repetitively use had/arms/legs; and grasp items. Incumbents constantly must think analytically; handle stress and emotion, concentrate on tasks, remember names and other details; examine and observe details; make decisions, and adjust to change. Essential functions continuously require incumbents be able to work irregular hours (nights/weekends); direct others; handle confidential information; maintain stamina during the work day; meet deadlines; operate equipment; and stay organized. 

 

Essential functions frequently require the ability to move/transport items weighing up to 50lbs.  Essential functions frequently require incumbents to be on call; use a keyboard/type; and use math/calculations. 

 

Essential functions occasionally require the ability to move/transport items weighing between 51lbs and 100lbs.  Essential functions occasionally require incumbents to attend work related meetings or trainings. 

 

Sensory Ability: Essential Functions require the ability to use effective verbal and written communication; and use of hand/eye coordination and fine manipulation to use tools and equipment.

 

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are continuously performed with exposure to risk of bodily injury from biological hazards; and wet, slippery floors/surfaces. Incumbents continuously must be able to work with others.

 

Essential functions are frequently performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, including inclement weather or dry environments; extreme hot or cold temperatures; risk of bodily injury from hazards including chemical and sharp objects/tools; dirt/mud, fumes, gases, odors, dust; moving mechanical parts; and extreme noise. 

 

Essential functions are occasionally performed with exposure to risk of bodily injury from hazards including electrical and heavy machinery; high places/high heights; constricted spaces; grease and oil; hot temperature devices including burners; and vibration. Incumbents occasionally must be able to work alone.

 

Incumbents regularly must be able to work around equipment/machinery; drive county vehicles and other equipment; and walk on uneven ground.
