Job Summary
Under the direction of the Assistance Vice President of Finance, the Staff Accountant is responsible for various general accounting functions, including processing the agency’s payroll and payments to vendors, recording and reconciling transactions, and assisting with month-end and year-end close.
Essential Functions
Payroll
- Process weekly payroll for agency (alternating regular and bonus pay cycles) in an accurate and timely manner
- Monitor and maintain accurate employee vacation, sick, and floater holiday accruals
- Reconcile and remit benefit premiums and contributions in accordance with established timelines
- Provide support to staff regarding payroll issues
- Process and manage termination checks, retro adjustments, and benefits deductions for employees
- Processes garnishment and tax-levy deductions
Accounts Payable
- Review payment documents for accurate expense coding and approvals before invoices are entered
- Resolve invoice and payment inquiries from vendors and agency staff as needed
- Analyze transactions in Prepaid and Exchange accounts monthly and prepare accounting entries to allocate expenses to appropriate programs/line items
- Provide administrative support for the Microix expense-approved application
- Provide administrative support for the PEX Prepaid debit card program
General Accounting
- Reconcile agency bank accounts monthly, per established timelines
- Prepare recurring monthly transaction entries as assigned by AVP of Finance
- Assist with preparing annual audit schedules and documentation
- Special projects as determined by AVP of Finance and/or CFO
- Works to promote and support justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion at all levels in the organization.
- Works to promote a trauma-informed work environment.
- Actively participate in the quality improvement project.
Qualifications
Competency Requirements
-Ability to speak, read, write and understand English (bilingual in Spanish, preferred)
-Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
-Must have excellent communication skills
-Must have knowledge of basic accounting principles
-Must demonstrate intermediate to advanced skill in using the Microsoft Suite (Work, Excel, Outlook) and accounting software (MIP Fund Accounting or similar)
-Experience with Paycom payroll system strongly preferred
Education and Experience
-Bachelor’s degree/business major (Accounting, Finance, or similar) strongly preferred
-Minimum of two (2) years Accounting experience, including Payroll, required
-Experience in a nonprofit business setting, preferred
Certifications/Licenses
-Valid CA driver’s license
Additional Requirements
-Tuberculosis clearance
-Department of Justice/Fingerprint clearance
-Satisfactory completion of health screening
-Proof of legal eligibility to work in the United States
-Satisfactory driving record

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of the Accounts Payable Clerk, the employee is frequently required to sit, and use his/her fingers to manipulate a keyboard or writing instrument. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, bend, and lift objects heavier than ten pounds. The employee is rarely required to drive or run.
Work Environment
The work environment is primarily indoors. The noise level varies from quiet to moderate.
