Starting Salary: $24.00 Hourly
Requirements (Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification):
- High school diploma or GED or have at least 1 year of full-time equivalent paid or volunteer experience direct provision of care to children.
- Must Physically participate in and successfully complete all required in-service training, including, but not limited to, CPR, First Aid, Response to Resistance techniques, etc.
- Must be physically able to provide individual and group control monitoring of residents' behavior.
- Must be age 21 or older.
- Must pass background screening process.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1 year of work experience working with delinquent youth in the supervision of activities.
- Possession of valid driver's license and auto liability insurance preferred.
- Diversion, Equity and Inclusion experience.
Job Duties:
- Provides regularly scheduled structured recreational activities for all housing units.
- Supervises youth while they participate in activities, which include, but are not limited to, large muscle exercises and game room activities, while maintaining safety and security responsibilities.
- Manages various sports tournaments.
- Provides documentation in recreation logbooks daily (i.e. head counts and daily recreation activities as well as volunteer services) to ensure compliance with applicable ACA/DYS standards. Enters data collected into the various recreation databases.
- Completes various recreation schedules (i.e. volunteer schedule, recreation monthly schedule, regular school schedule, summer school schedule and no school schedule).
- Communicates with various Youth Center volunteers as needed with monthly scheduling needs.
- Communicates daily with supervisor of the Recreation Unit or senior officer on duty with regard to the schedule of activities for each housing unit, deployment of staff, and special behavioral considerations of residents.
- Provides structured activities for both female and male residents who have special needs or behavioral considerations (i.e. SST behavioral needs, medical needs, etc.).
- Participates in and successfully completes in-service training as required.
- Other duties as administratively assigned.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
Summary of KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES required for the position:
- Must possess analytical skills/abilities, which include: Ability to organize activities according to established priorities. Ability to use crisis intervention counseling skills to resolve situations such as verbal altercations between residents or residents refusing to comply with rules. Ability to observe, identify and closely monitor unusual or escalating behavior patterns.
- Must possess clerical/administrative skills/abilities, which include: Ability to read, write and count in order to review log entries and maintain written account of all extraordinary activities during assigned shift and maintain resident count.
- Must possess computer/technical skills/abilities, which include: Ability to navigate and use various computer programs and databases within the Recreation Unit.
- Must possess project/process management skills/abilities, which include: Ability to use crisis intervention and counseling skills to resolve conflict and manage compliant behavior to the Youth Center rules.
- Must possess written and oral communication skills/abilities, which include: Ability to use interpersonal communication skills requiring judgment and tact to communicate effectively with residents who are engaged in a disruptive behavior. Must have the ability to work as a team with co-workers.
- Must possess physical skills/abilities, which include: Ability to physically participate in training and use approved physical intervention techniques such as blocks for personal protection, body hold techniques, arm hold techniques, and take downs, when necessary; must be active and ambulatory to respond to need for behavior management.
Special Working Conditions and/or Hazards:
- Employees work indoors and are protected from weather conditions or contaminants, but not necessarily occasional temperature changes.
- Secure correctional facility, with some exposure to unruly and, at time, out-of-control resident populations.
