Job Purpose:
The ESS Alternate Curriculum Teacher will provide a positive learning environment and respond to the individual needs of students that are pursuing a high school diploma via an alternate curriculum. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching students with cognitive and physical disabilities, exhibit knowledge of communication systems, exhibit competency with Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plan techniques, and understand the physical and hygiene supports necessary for students to effectively to participate in school activities. The alternate curriculum teacher will acquire and present competency in Dalton Public Schools alternate curriculum materials and assessment techniques and have experience working collaboratively with other professionals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Specially designs content instruction using district and school resources (Unique Learning Systems, ABLLS-R, Leveled Literacy Intervention, Running Records, specialized writing programs, vocational programming, and specialized math programs)
2. Directs the activities of the ESS Paraprofessional to support IEP goal mastery and each student’s access to grade level standards to support progress toward graduation.
3. Collaborates with administrators, teachers, therapists, support staff, specially trained ESS staff, and parents to support student progress.
4. Complies with IDEA and state special education rules pertaining to timelines, procedures, and guidelines for IEP development.
5. Facilitates IEP meetings at the direction of the building administrator.
6. Completes special education documentation according to DPS local procedures.
7. Pursues professional learning opportunities to build professional expertise.
8. Maintains student records, including special education records, confidential records, records of services provided, progress monitoring records, and behavioral data.
9. Pursues new developments in areas pertaining to special education techniques, or as directed by a supervisor.
10. Participates in professional organizations, professional learning opportunities, and continually seeks to enhance professional knowledge and skills.
Qualifications:
To be qualified for this position the employee must possess certification in Special Education- Alternate Curriculum Consultative (P-12) and Secondary Content Cognitive Level Certification.

This position works 190 days.
