Overview

Hampton Lumber is seeking an experienced HR Division Manager to join our team in Willamina, Oregon. The ideal candidate for this role will be able to demonstrate their ability to provide strategic and technical Human Resource leadership in a manufacturing environment, and will play a crucial role in maintaining a workforce that drives our competitive advantage through strategic recruitment, training, and retention of top talent. This person will manage all work related to hiring, compensation, promotion, termination, career development, and retirement of the employees at the mill. The HR Manager’s job entails providing practical and consistent support, direction, and advice to the Leadership Team on HR procedures and policies, best practices, employment rewards, and benefits. This job will involve occasional travel to other mills and to the corporate office, including some overnight stays. The HR Division Manager reports directly to the Plant Manager, with a dotted line to the HR Business Partner. Management may modify, add, or reallocate job responsibilities to better accommodate the business's evolving needs.

Responsibilities

Recruitment

  • Oversee and actively participate in the recruiting, interviewing, and hiring processes for job openings, using outside-the box thinking and methods to access and engage a diverse and qualified applicant pool, while collaborating closely with our hiring supervisors to guide the candidate selection process and assist with job offers.
  • Maintain recruitment efforts by being visible in the community and providing support and involvement with community events, and champion recruiting efforts on and off site while ensuring the recruiting team participates in activities that enhance Hampton’s reputation as an employer of choice.
  • Create job postings that align with Hampton's branding and quality standards, while consistently reviewing current recruiting trends to give Hampton front line advantage to potential applicants, and monitor the progress of open job postings to ensure a sufficient number of qualified applicants are received. Collaborate with the Corporate HR team if time-to-fill metrics exceed established goals to adjust recruitment strategies.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for the iCIMS software, providing training and support to hiring managers for effective system utilization, and ensure adherence to the iCIMS workflow, including timeline metrics, to deliver a positive candidate experience.

Orientation and Retention

  • Facilitate new hire orientations and onboarding processes ensuring seamless integration into the company and alignment with organizational values and goals, and evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of these practices to provide recommendations for enhancements when necessary to meet company objectives.
  • Effectively promote employee engagement and foster a positive workplace culture, and work with the Leadership Team to enhance and maintain our employee’s opinion that we are the local employer of choice.
  • Conduct exit interviews, compile detailed reports, and share insights with the Corporate HR team to support retention strategies and continuous improvement.

Training and Development

  • Oversee the accurate and timely entry of all on-site training into the centralized, real-time company-wide training tracking system, ensuring records are comprehensive and up-to-date.
  • Ensure the mill completes scheduled training sessions on time and maintains compliance with industry standards aligning with Hampton's talent development objectives.
  • Regularly review the company-wide training library and proactively identify gaps, requesting additional training and development opportunities as necessary.
  • Champion career development initiatives and collaborate with management, supervisors, and employees to ensure awareness of available personal and team growth training opportunities and route requests for new training programs or materials to the Corporate HR team.
  • Maintain the facility bulletin boards, including but not limited to required and informational postings and contribute to the facility newsletter and Plant Advisory Committee.
  • Train new members of the Leadership Team on the company’s policies and procedures and oversee the planning, monitoring, and evaluation of employees work performance. Guide and support leadership in coaching and disciplining employees to maintain high performance and alignment with company expectations.

Management

  • Manage the OSHA log documenting workplace incidents, and manage claims with SAIF to facilitate the quick return of employees to work.
  • Administer and manage all protected leave programs and Short-Term Disability requests, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and timely processing.
  • Administer new hire, random, and post-accident drug testing and background checks to ensure compliance and safety.
  • Collaborate with Payroll and Benefits teams in regards to employee benefits, diversity programs, and related initiatives to align with evolving company goals and employee needs.
  • Ensure compliance with key safety programs, including Hearing Conservation, Lockout, Machine Guarding, Combustible Dust, and other safety-related compliance requirements.
  • Actively support and participate in Willamina Leadership meetings, and serve as a leading member of the Safety Committee.

Qualifications

  • Have the ability to communicate directly and clearly; be able to coach employees and leadership through issues that may be complex, difficult, and emotional, and make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues by using judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, policies, procedures, regulations, or government law.
  • Have a strong work ethic and sense of commitment, and the willingness to embrace change while striving for continuous improvement.
  • Over five years’ experience in HR in a manufacturing environment preferred
  • Demonstrated competency with technology, including strong experience using Microsoft 365 tools—particularly Teams and SharePoint; comfortable adopting new technologies and preferably familiar with leveraging AI tools to improve HR processes and productivity.

More than half of our employees have worked here for over ten years and many retire after working here for decades.
