Job Description:
The Prototype & Design manager is a hands-on position responsible for the completion of prototype products and coordination of first production runs to support the Sales and Production departments. This includes bringing a product from idea/concept through design, prototyping and manufacturing. Out-of-shop duties include attending design reviews, brainstorming meetings, CAD drafting of 2D product drawings and 3D solid model drawings for prototyping. This person must be capable of handling multiple projects simultaneously, keeping short timelines on schedule, and reporting on project status at a moment’s notice.
Responsibilities:
- Produce prototypes within budget and on schedule using in-house equipment whenever possible, or use outside vendors if necessary, for items we can’t produce in-house.
- Develop detailed technical drawings and specifications for tap handles, signs, POP products, and manufacturing fixtures & tooling in 2D and 3D using SolidWorks CAD software.
- Participate and provide input in design meetings and brainstorming sessions.
- Assist all departments in determining the production method to provide the best output while maintaining high quality and meeting deadlines.
- Assist in process and tooling development for manufacturing.
- Maintain clean work environment by regular cleaning and upkeep.
- Become familiar with all shop processes and equipment through on the job training.
- Maintain prototype log and communicate timeline additions or challenges with all involved parties.
Job Skills and Qualifications Required/Preferred:
- Experience in model making and woodworking,
- Familiar with laser engraving, 3D printing and 3D drawing programs.
- Ability to proficiently and safely use woodworking equipment, hand lathes, drill presses, sanders, saws, CNC router, and other shop equipment.
- Proven creative skills in design and ability to improve existing designs.
- Strong self-starter who can work with little/no supervision.
- Well organized, detail oriented, and team player capable of working in a deadline dictated environment.
- Working knowledge of computers, Microsoft Office, SolidWorks, DraftSight, CorelDraw, MecSoft Visual CADCAM or similar CAM/Posting software.
- Craftsmanship and attention to detail is a must.
- Familiarity with a variety of traditional shop tools, woodworking equipment and rapid prototyping processes (CNC, SLA, etc.).
- Good math skills, communication skills (written, spoken, and interpersonal), and mechanical aptitude are important.
- Basic understanding of electronic soldering, vacuum forming, hand sculpting is a plus.
