What are the responsibilities and job description for the Farm/Ranch Hand position at Hansen Livestock Company?
Looking for farm/ranch hand on a 5th generation family owned and operated farm/ranch in Dillon, Montana. This is a full time position with a competitive salary based on experience, health insurance and housing provided (3 bedroom/2 bath, basement, 2 car garage). The house is located close to farm about 6 miles out of Dillon. You would work and reside at the farm location from the first of November through the first of June, approximately 6 months. The farm has a feed lot operation, weaning heifer calves approximately 500 head and feeding them through until spring turnout on the ranch. We also have 1st time heifers and calve them as well, approximately 225 at the farm and calve them from February 1st through March. Once they are calved and branded at the farm, we truck them to the ranch in May. Young, newly purchased bulls also reside at the farm until May. We are very passionate about our crops and livestock and take pride in our team. The farm is located just north of Dillon and the ranch is south of Dillon, they are about 45 minutes distance from each other. A CDL is required for the position we transport livestock, equipment and hay to and from the farm and ranch on a regular basis. We have Freightliner, Western Star and Kenworth trucks and mostly John Deere tractors and equipment. We take truck and machinery maintenance very seriously. We haul our own cattle and hay, must have experience doing both for this position. We do truck some cattle in the fall to local auction yard about 2 hours from ranch location.
Months when duties are slow at the farm, you will travel to the ranch and help process cattle, hay, trail cattle to new pastures horseback and with 4 wheeler and lastly, help maintain fence on summer allotments. Most of our cattle we move horseback, must be able to ride in the mountains. We are horseback the majority of the 6 months at the ranch location. We do have ranch horses available. You work at the ranch location for approximately 6 months of the year. We have furnished housing at the ranch location (2 bedroom one bath). Ranch location work begins in June through the 1st of November. Winters are slower and we tend to get caught up on various projects or machinery at each location.
You will be working alongside the owners and other employees at each location farm and ranch. You will also be working independently at times. You must enjoy working outdoors and be comfortable working longer hours during peak seasons like farming, calving and haying. You will have a ranch vehicle provided for you to use.
Responsibilities of the position also include; seasonal duties like operating farming equipment from breaking ground to hay harvest (some wheat, barley, alfalfa, wild hay), you will be responsible for helping maintain machinery, must be mechanically inclined repairing large equipment , various shop/mechanic work, some welding, feeding ground hay in feed truck from late October through April/May turnout, fencing, sorting livestock, general care of livestock, vaccinating, recognizing sick or lame animals and doctoring when needed. We run program cattle (NHTC & GAP natural) record keeping when treating cattle is very important. We strive in low stress handling of livestock, no exceptions! The feed lot is set up for walking the animals to and from lots or sick pens by foot. No personal dogs allowed in lots.
