General Summary of Duties
MT / MLT is a professional member of the laboratory staff who works well as a member of the laboratory team, performing all laboratory procedures (Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Microbiology, Serology, Urinalysis, and Point of Care). ML / MLT will assist with R&D, staff training, quality control review and assessment, Instrumentation maintenance, venipuncture, solve problems under critical time constraints, operates under minimal supervision, and assist the department Lead.
Essential Job Functions :
1. Performs laboratory testing accurately and in a timely manner and reports findings as per laboratory protocol.
2. Follows policy and procedure to maintain quality control for each test performed and documents quality control as required for testing. Documents and reconciles outliers.
3. Demonstrates accurate knowledge of instrumentation as appropriate. Strives to continuously improve and expand knowledge to become more expert in specialty area served and to become proficient in other areas of lab.
4. Performs and documents all instrument maintenance as described by the manufacturer and / or by lab policy.
5. Maintains all documentation required for regulatory agencies (ex : temperature charts, calibrations).
6. Maintains a clean and organized work area. Properly disposes of waste and disinfects work area daily in keeping with OSHA guidelines. Makes sure counters are left clean and free of clutter.
7. Follows all safety and OSHA guidelines with regard to personal protective equipment in the performance of duties (e.g., wears gloves when handling specimens, properly disposes of sharps).
8. Contributes to positive work environment to include working toward continues quality improvement, improving efficiency, and reducing errors to an acceptable level.
9. Calls abnormal results to ordering physician office and speaks with the physician and / or appropriate designee as needed.
10. Demonstrates knowledge of LIS and performs documentation. Shows initiative to become more proficient.
11. Assists in maintaining department inventory. Keeps stock maintained without creating need for unnecessary "rush" orders. Records expiration dates on supplies when received and opened; watches to insure expired items or disposed of properly.
12. Participates in proficiency testing. Consistently maintains acceptable scores (80 % or better).
13. Participates in, has knowledge of, and helps develops, laboratory Process Performance Improvement activities, including evaluation of new equipment and / or procedures or methods.
14. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department. Strives to continuously improve and expand knowledge to become more expert in areas served. Qualifications : Education :
15. Minimum Education is an Associate's degree and nationally certified (or eligible within 1 year of hire) as a Medical Laboratory Technician
16. Preferred candidate is nationally certified as Medical Laboratory Scientist / Technologist, or equivalent term and a graduate of an approve course of study in a Bachelor's degree Science
Experience :
17. 0-2 years of specifically related experience; knowledge in the areas of quality improvement, quality control, and equipment maintenance and laboratory safety is desired.
