The Harford County Public Library offers a competitive compensation Starting wage, depending on candidate qualifications, is between $15.00 and $15.89.
Position Summary:
The Children Summer Assistant for the Rolling Reader outreach mobile service is responsible for assisting staff with carrying out the Summer Reading program at various outreach sites. Performs a variety of routine clerical tasks. Performs other duties as assigned. Meets minimum public service hours as defined by Library Administration.
Essential Duties:
- Assists Rolling Reader staff with Summer Reading Program initiatives;
- Registers and enters data of SRP participant information into computer database;
- Photocopies, collates, organizes, and distributes Summer Reading Program or related materials, as directed;
- Creates displays decorating outreach mobile vehicle using current years Summer Reading Program theme.
Standard Functions:
- Serves on committees and participates in workshops, seminars, and training as requested;
- Notifies Supervisor with suggested ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of personnel and procedures and system-wide goals and objectives;
- Learns new skills and technologies to retain proficiency in areas of expertise;
- Is dependable and punctual;
- Maintains a positive, friendly, and cooperative attitude and provides consistent customer service;
- Upholds all library policies and procedures as defined in Harford County Public Librarys Policies and Procedures Manual;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or G.E.D.;
- Current enrollment at college/university working towards Associate or Bachelors degree preferably in child development, early elementary, physical education or related field;
- Experience working with children, preferably with elementary and middle school aged students;
- Customer service experience;
- Basic computer skills to include use of email, data entry, internet searches and ability to use web-based employee self-service portal;
- Ability to obtain and maintain criminal background check;
- Ability to provide documentation and maintain a valid drivers license with no more than 3 points;
- Ability to work day, evening, and weekends hours.

- Knowledge of alphabetical and numerical systems;
- Ability to create a welcoming and friendly environment encouraging repeat business;
- Ability to complete repetitive tasks with accuracy;
- Ability to be adaptable, flexible and patient with customers and staff;
- Ability to work independently and dependably to complete routine tasks.
Work Environment:
1. Work requires occasional physical effort in handling of light materials, up to 30 pounds, in non-strenuous work environment. For example, set up and take down of tables, chairs or other equipment for meetings or events, pushing/pulling of library carts onto book mobile lift or inside centers;
2. Environment includes moderate noises (i.e. an office with conversations, photocopiers, and/or computer printers);
3. Work also involves standing or walking up to 60% of the time;
4. Requires sitting and use of computer and keyboard for extended periods of time.
5. Observes safe work place practices with uncluttered workspace, including office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, proper lifting techniques and following fire regulations;
6. Ability to travel to branch/outside locations is required;
7. May require working in adverse weather conditions and exposure to dirt, dust and unpleasant odors.
Reporting Relationship:
This position reports to Library Associate III Outreach. Does not regularly supervise other staff.
Work Week:
Work schedule includes day, evening and weekend hours.
