What are the responsibilities and job description for the Family Support Specialist position at Harlem Community Center?
Basic Function:
The Family Support Specialist serves as a vital link between families, schools, and community resources, ensuring that students and their families receive the social and health support services they need. This role also includes overseeing the center’s operations in the absence of the Site Administrator and/or CEO. The Family Support Specialist reports to the Child Care Director. Must meet or exceed the minimum eligibility requirements specified in Sec. 407.130 of the Illinois State Standards for child care centers.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Site Administrator to ensure smooth day-to-day operations of the center, including flexibility in hours and classroom support as needed.
- Act as the primary responsible leader in the absence of the Site Administrator and/or Child Care Director.
- Provide consultation and guidance to families on child health, behavior management, social service referrals, parenting skills, and other concerns that impact the child’s education.
- Assist classroom teachers in addressing the special needs of individual children and their families.
- Maintain knowledge of available social services and effectively coordinate with external agencies to support families. Keep detailed case notes and documentation as required.
- Communicate program goals and objectives to parents through meetings, newsletters, flyers, and special events. Facilitate communication between families, schools, and social service agencies.
- Organize activities that foster family interaction and engagement within the center.
- Participate in recruiting, hiring, and training staff, ensuring effective personnel management, including clear position descriptions, performance evaluations, and professional development.
- Supervise and evaluate all center personnel and co-lead staff meetings with the Curriculum Director.
- Plan and implement monthly family activities, classroom celebrations, and special events, as well as coordinate fundraising initiatives.
- Collaborate with teachers, school staff, and local service agencies to address student and family needs.
- Oversee the screening of incoming preschool students and work closely with school district personnel to support preschool readiness.
- Maintain professional relationships with external agencies and school districts to ensure appropriate referrals and services for families.
- Perform additional job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
- Represent the Harlem Community Center professionally at all times
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Social work or a related field.
- Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role within an early childhood education setting.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and effectively manage multiple priorities.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
