What are the responsibilities and job description for the General Maintenance position at Harmony Public Schools?
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
o High School Diploma or GED (preferred)
o Minimum 1 year of experience in building and mechanical equipment maintenance and repair (preferred)
o Maintenance Service Certificate in one or more skill areas, including Electrician, HVAC/R Plumbing and Carpenter services (preferred)
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
o Understands and supports the mission, vision and values of Harmony Public Schools.
o Complies with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations
o Adheres to the district’s safety policies and procedures
o Maintains confidentiality in the conduct of district business
o Assists skilled workers with repair and maintenance of district facilities
o Performs maintenance service or repairs in one or more skill areas, including minor plumbing, carpentry, painting and plastering, machine servicing, electrical repairs or installations, or vehicle servicing.
o Performs tasks such as but not limited to changing light bulbs, installing paper dispenser units, changing filters, changing locks on doors, minor decorative maintenance and other tasks not requiring a licensed skilled trades person or journeyman
o Assists skilled workers with facilities repair and maintenance, including repairing woodwork; replacing electrical switches,
fixtures, and motors; painting, repairing, and replacing plumbing fixtures and drainage systems; and replacing broken glass
o Hangs pictures, mirrors, blackboards, bulletin boards, projection screens, towel dispensers, soap dispensers, and other items as required per ADA standards
o Performs outside custodial duties such as removal of leaves, dirt, clean up trash, recycling of broken branches of trees, removal of snow as needed
o Applies all applicable OSHA and related local safety requirements to all assigned work
o Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
o Operates equipment and uses tools following established safety procedures
o Corrects unsafe conditions in the area and reports any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor immediately
o Inspects building exterior, playground equipment, and grounds; performs maintenance and minor repairs
o Detects and reports needed major repairs on building structures and their systems, including lockers, furniture, and equipment
o Performs repairs to floor coverings, ceramic tile and cove base.
o Is knowledgeable to address leaks, clogs or other drainage problems
o Assists with mowing and detailing of grounds.
o Is able to use power washing equipment.
o Uses materials, equipment and all hand tools required to complete assigned duties proficiently and safely.
o Keeps daily records of materials used and fills out work orders assigned for the day; detects and reports repair and maintenance problems to supervisor.
o Completes repairs as requested on work orders
o Performs routine maintenance on building systems.
o Repairs minor irrigation issues such as replacing broken sprinkler heads and pipelines
o Maintains records of scheduled maintenance procedures.
o Responds to emergency maintenance requests as required.
o Obtains estimates for supplies, repair parts; orders parts as needed
o Moves, installs, assembles, and repairs all school furniture and equipment as needed
o Cleans and assists with upkeep of the facilities.
o Installs ceiling and floor materials
o Attends training programs (classroom and virtual) as designated.
o Recycles unused or broken furniture, boxes and clean up dumpster area as needed
o Trims trees as needed
o Uses blower to clean in front of campuses as needed
o May be required to assist with special events.
o Performs other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
o Knowledge of basic construction and routine maintenance and repair procedures
o Ability to use hand tools (e.g., hammer, shovel, screwdriver) and power tools (e.g., radial saw, reciprocating saw, drill, pneumatic hammer)
o Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district.
o Ability to follow instructions from supervisors or senior maintenance workers.
o Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both internal and external to the district.
o Knowledge of general carpentry and repair.
o Excellent organizational and time management skills.
o Ability to work independently
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
o Prolonged periods standing, walking, climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, pulling, pushing; heavy lifting and carrying; repetitive hand motions;
o Work in tiring and uncomfortable positions; outside and inside; on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, ladders, and scaffolding and around machinery with moving parts; move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment; exposure to hot and cold temperatures, excessive noise; frequent district-wide travel
o Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
o Nights and weekend activities will be occasionally and during emergencies required.
