What you will do for Harris County Precinct 4 (HCP4)
Harris County Precinct 4 is seeking a Carpenter. This position constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard, conforming to local building codes.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Studies blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to the type of material required, such as lumber or fiberboard, and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.
- Selects specified type of lumber or other materials.
- Prepares layout.
- Marks cutting and assembly lines on materials.
- Shapes materials to prescribed measurements.
- Assembles cut, shaped materials, and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue.
- Verifies trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter’s level.
- Erects wood and/or metal stud framework for structures and lays subflooring.
- Builds stairs, lays out, and installs partitions and cabinetwork.
- Applies shock-absorbing, sound-deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
- Fits and installs weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware, such as locks, letter drops, and kick plates.
- Finnish: knowledge of carpentry, siding, sheetrock, and concrete are all desirable skills.
- Constructs forms, installs wire, ties rebar for pouring concrete.
- Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
- May require working before, during, or after an emergency or disaster at the department's discretion.

Education:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Experience:
- Minimum of three (3) years of related experience and/or training as a carpenter
- Equivalent combination of trade school education and experience may be considered
Valid Texas driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manual.
- Can write routine reports and correspondence.
- Knows how to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of Precinct 4.
- Capacity to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Excellence in applying concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Practical problem-solving with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Skilled in interpreting a variety of instructions furnished.
- Ability to work with others and be team oriented.
- Flexible personality, open to new ideas, and suggestions.
- Good observational skills.
- Initiative, ingenuity, and perseverance to complete projects.
- Polite communication and direction to others as necessary.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle, feel and reach with hands and arms; frequently required to sit, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell.
- The carpenter must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee is periodically exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; vibration; night-time shifts; and routine use of a computer monitor.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
