What you will do at Harris County Precinct 2
Harris County Precinct 2 Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a skilled Landscaper with experience in construction and irrigation maintenance to help maintain and enhance our public parks. This position is responsible for landscaping duties, light construction repairs to park amenities, and irrigation system upkeep. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with park infrastructure repairs, irrigation system troubleshooting, and herbicide application. This position works a 4-day work week and is designated as essential personnel during natural disasters and emergencies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Install and construct various landscape elements and park/trail amenities including patios, walkways, signs, retaining walls, decks, fences and irrigation systems.
- Assist with special park improvement projects and infrastructure enhancements.
- Perform minor carpentry, concrete work and general maintenance as needed.
- Read and interpret landscape plans and blueprints.
- Operate and maintain construction equipment, tools and equipment.
- Plant and maintain trees, shrubs, lawns and gardens by performing routine maintenance tasks including trimming, pruning, weeding and debris cleanup.
- Apply pesticides and herbicides as needed to maintain park appearance standards.
- Assist with landscaping record keeping including work logs, inspection forms, work orders, receive and order supplies and plant material.

Education:
High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution
Experience:
Two (2) years of experience in landscaping
One (1) year of experience in basic construction practices or combination
Basic identification knowledge of plants, weeds, plant diseases and pests
License:
Maintains a herbicide applicator or operators certification and license as required by local, state, and federal law. If not, must have the ability to obtain the applicator license within 100 days of hire.
Class B CDL upon hiring or the ability to acquire one within 100 days of hire.
- Knowledge of landscaping techniques, irrigation systems and facility maintenance.
- Basic knowledge of construction techniques including concrete and carpentry.
- Understanding of herbicide and pesticide application.
- Ability to operate and maintain landscaping tools, equipment and machinery.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, irrigation plans and work orders.

Hours may vary based on business needs of the department and some weekend, evening hours or holidays may be required during special events. This position working 4-day / 10-hours shifts. Ability to work long hours and overtime during emergencies (including holidays, weekends, storm work).

Reporting Relationship:
- Reports to: Foreman
Supervises: None
- Required to work outdoors on varied and often unstable terrain involving exposure to varying weather conditions of extreme hot and cold temperatures.
- Some working conditions require special precautions and the use of protective gear (e.g., hard hats, respirator masks, gloves, etc.).
- Some exposure to mechanical, electrical and explosive hazards, dust, toxic and chemicals, and confined space work, using proper safety precautions.
- This is a physically active position which requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and requires moderate physical exertion and exposure to dangerous tools and equipment and hazardous chemicals and pesticides.
Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
