Position Description
The Harvard Ministerial Leadership Program ( HMLP ) is currently recruiting for an Executive Director responsible for the overall leadership and execution of the program.
Key Responsibilities:
The role involves the overall leadership and execution of the program, including the identification and recruitment of participating ministers, curriculum development, operational delivery, fostering communities of practice among participants and alumni, overseeing the staff and budget, and forging a dynamic relationship and exchange with the three Harvard University participating graduate schools. The executive director will also work closely with the deans and participating faculty members of the three graduate schools and will consult with Big Win Philanthropy. In the first year, the incumbent executive director will be assisted by the inaugural executive director who will continue in an advisory capacity for one year to ensure continuity and a smooth transition.
Specific tasks will include:
- Work with Big Win Philanthropy, the program's advisory board, and the participating schools to continually refine and upgrade the vision of success and the corresponding curriculum, program, and materials (website, case studies, planning journals and boards).
- In consultation with Big Win, undertake annual selection and recruitment of ministers and "faculty" to participate in the forums.
- Work with faculty/mentor/resource team to ensure sessions are engaging and on-point to intended learning outcomes.
- Supervise all logistics, including protocol, travel and accommodation.
- Develop a fully costed budget and oversee its disbursement and financial reporting.
- Work with leadership at the three graduate schools to identify synergies and ensure the program is meaningfully additive to the schools while benefitting from the resources available at the university.
- Engage in developing and executing a monitoring and evaluation strategy.
- Oversee a tracking system for staying in contact with former participants.
- Develop and execute a communications strategy.
Basic Qualifications
- 10 years of relevant work experience required.
- PhD, ScD, or other doctoral or terminal degree (e.g., MD), or equivalent combination of degrees and professional/practice experience, is expected for academic appointments at the Harvard Chan School.
- Academic rank will be determined on the basis of educational background, research and teaching record, and academic leadership skills and experience.
- Position is full time, on-campus, and oversees a team of two (not including faculty, mentors, and other contributors).
- The Executive Director candidate must be located in (or be willing to relocate to) the Boston metropolitan area.
Additional Qualifications
- Management-level experience relevant to this initiative that encompasses one or more of the following: nurturing leadership growth; senior-level government experience, preferably on the African continent; high-level facilitation.
- Willingness to support leaders' agendas instead of approaching subject matter prescriptively.
- Sophistication to interact meaningfully with very senior political leaders from the global South; a robust network of relationships with such leaders a plus.
- Highly self-motivated with proven capacity to take initiative and produce quality deliverables within designated timeframes.
- Willingness to hands-on manage associated logistics with a high-level attention to detail.
- Ability and willingness to travel internationally frequently.
- Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment; juggle and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands; work independently with minimal supervision; and show awareness of when to seek supervisory assistance.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate appropriately and effectively at all levels within and outside the program and in different cultural contexts.
- Fluency in English mandatory; language skills relevant to work in sub-Saharan Africa appreciated (e.g. French, Portuguese, Swahili, Amharic).
- Experience with media technologies and other modern learning and presentation processes a plus.
- Familiarity with governance theory and international development appreciated.
Special Instructions
Overview:
The Harvard Ministerial Leadership Program ( HMLP ) is a joint initiative of Harvard University's T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the John F. Kennedy School of Government, the Graduate School of Education, and Big Win Philanthropy. The program, founded in 2012, supports governmental ministers who are dedicated to improving human development outcomes for their populations. Over 250 federal ministers have participated in the program to date.
Two four-day forums hosted at Harvard University serve as the initiative's centerpiece: one for human development ministers (health, education, etc.) and the other for ministers of finance and planning. These forums provide a framework for ministers to reflect on their potential for transformational leadership; to establish "legacy goals;" to prepare for challenges in implementing those goals; and to develop bespoke roadmaps for execution. Given the current demographic transition underway in much of Africa, and the disproportionate potential to meaningfully impact lives there through quality governance, the program prioritizes ministers from sub-Saharan African countries.
