Job Description
A pulmonary function technician (PFT) performs diagnostic tests to assess how well a patient's lungs are working. They work with patients to help physicians diagnose and treat lung diseases and other respiratory conditions.
Pulmonary Function Tech I
Performs a variety of diagnostic pulmonary function procedures ordered by physicians with emphasis on obtaining high quality test data to aid in the screening, diagnosis and treatment of various pulmonary disorders.
- Performs diagnostic pulmonary procedures including invasive and non-invasive techniques with detailed precision using complex diagnostic equipment.
- Maintains cleanliness and function of PFT Lab including required equipment calibration and supplies inventory.
- Performs required documentation including testing results in the medical record and quality assurance/quality control data.
- Provides instruction in diagnostic procedures to medical residents, respiratory care students and other respiratory care staff.
- Supervises testing activity in PFT Lab ensuring accurate reporting of test data to and from those sites.
- Coordinates PFT activity at CMC or Facilitator's approved health fairs including scheduling staff for coverage of those events.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge in field of diagnostic pulmonary testing through participation in educational activities.
- May be asked to perform duties of a Respiratory Therapist according to licensure and staffing needs.
Qualifications
Education: Associate degree and/or certification required from a CoARC (Committee on Accreditation of Respiratory Care Education) approved school of respiratory therapy.
Experience: No experience required. One to three years of experience in clinical respiratory care including diagnostic pulmonary function testing preferred.
Licensure/Certifications/Registration: CPFT required within first year of employment. AHA BLS-HCP required. May be required to obtain/maintain AHA ACLS based on specific work unit.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Good interpersonal and communication skills.
