Summary                                                                                                                     

Under close supervision, the Deputy enforces all civil and criminal laws of the State of Texas and Hays County.  The Deputy protects the citizens of Hays County and anyone traveling through Hays County.  This position protects the life and property of the citizens and helps keep Hays County free from crime. The work involves isolating and defining unknown conditions, resolving critical problems and possibly making life or death decisions.   This position must have a strong work ethic, meet deadlines, have good attendance, be punctual, be reliable, have honesty, integrity, be free from moral turpitude, and have a proper attitude.

Individuals in this position serve at the pleasure of the current elected official.

Supervision

  • The Deputy is required to satisfactorily perform the above duties as will be evaluated for soundness, appropriateness and conformity to policy and procedure
  • This position does not supervise any personnel
  • Provide very high visibility at assigned schools
  • Plan and implement programs to help guide students to make sound decisions
  • Assures the services delivered by the Sheriff’s Office meet quality and timeliness standards
  • Enforces the civil and criminal laws of Texas
  • Takes citizen complaints from the school environment (campus)such as animal disturbances, suspicious vehicles and persons, assaults, thefts, criminal mischief, burglaries, 911 hang-ups, runaways, and a variety of other situations.
  • Follows up on cases being investigated and assists other agencies, including. fire, EMS, Department of Public Safety, traffic control, and other similar agencies
  • Testifies in courts as needed
  • Maintains patrol vehicle and equipment issued
  • Maintains a high profile in the school community
  • Assists detectives and supervisors as needed
  • May perform Field Training Deputy responsibilities, documents all activities and writes reports of what happened
  • Works with citizens to identify problems, hazards, and quality of life issues
  • Responds to request for services by EMS, fire departments, public utility, and other bonafide requests
  • May provide the media with information as directed by supervisor
  • Makes warrantless arrests as per the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure
  • Prepares probable cause affidavits to present to a magistrate for issuance of arrest warrants
  • Presents a sanctioned Juvenile and Adult Criminal Justice Curriculum to students, teachers, administrators, and parents to provide awareness and education on these topics
  • Requires the employee to be able to render credible testimony in any court proceeding to include Justice Courts, County Courts, District Courts and any U.S. Federal Court
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the required education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job
  • Prior Peace Officer experience preferred
  • Class C TX Driver’s License
  • Licensed Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic Peace Officer
  • Ability to maintain continuing education requirements as outlined by TCOLE
  • Must successfully complete and pass the Hays County Sheriff’s Office Field Training Program 
  • Must successfully complete other required courses within a year of being assigned the class
  • Must be 21 years of age

  • Maintain proficiency with their handgun, shotgun and rifle
  • Pass a biennial Tactical Driving Course
  • Pass a biennial Control Tactics Course
