Summary
Under general supervision, the intern provides case management and informal counseling to parents (defendants) who have entered a plea of guilty or no contest for a Parent Contributing to Non-attendance criminal charge. Monitor, educate and ensure compliance with each respective court order. Monitors the child’s attendance and the parent’s ability to ensure the child is attending school and reports to the Judge of the Court.

Individuals in this position serve at the pleasure of the current elected official.

Conducts initial and subsequent interviews with the parent(s).

Obtain background information of each case, which includes interviewing the parents, spouse, other adults in the household, school officials and other significant contacts.

Assesses the individual’s environment, family, and social situation and complete needs assessment of the parent and household.

Educates parents attributes and skills necessary to achieve success in compliance with court orders.

Assures parents’ understanding of obligations with respect to conditions of the Court’s order and monitors compliance with the terms and conditions of deferral.

Monitors and meets with parents and determines progress and compliance through juvenile self-reporting, meetings at home or school, and at court hearings.

Supervises and monitors respective child’s school attendance

Supervises and monitors the completion of deferred disposition/court orders and develop plans for compliance.

Addresses violations of court orders by taking appropriate action and reports violations to the court.

Coordinates with schools and/or school districts regarding access to school campuses and students. Gathers attendance and behavior reports from the schools.

Develops and/or maintains a list of available resources for referral purposes

Assists parents with various referrals, including, but not limited to counseling, treatment and job referrals.

Coordinates case management with representatives of the school and social service agencies.

Verifies attendance and completion of alcohol, drug, mental health counseling and any other court ordered programs.

Prepares written assessments and recommendations to the court concerning the parent’s compliance and progress during the deferred adjudication period.

Assists Judge in court on appearance day and for show cause hearings. Appears and testifies in court.

Develops, coordinates and teaches classes that are specifically designed to address issues regarding the circumstances of the violation (e.g. Leadership and Parenting, Conflict Resolution, etc.).

Coordinates or collaborates with other organizations to provide community service projects for parents assigned to do community service.

Assist the Juvenile Truancy Case Manager Intern with case load.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.Required

Currently enrolled undergraduate student or recent graduate in Criminal Justice, Human Development and Family Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or a directly related field.
Preferred

Currently enrolled graduate student in Criminal Justice, Human Development and Family Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or a directly related field.

Proficiency in Spanish and/or sign language.

Experience working with adolescents from low-income communities.Valid Texas driver’s license and reliable transportation.
